Anyone here running these? I've looked at these and the Geoff Steele ones.

Tempted but even though its a track car I still want a quality fit and finish.

As I've mentioned before, there's a small group of us getting carbon doors fabricated for the E90 M3. They had to create molds from our doors.

Today, the first set got delivered over to Racewerkz! They haven't been fully unwrapped, but Casey said that they look great so far.

Supposedly, they weigh around 10lbs each.

The fabricator sent these pics of the doors today.

Those look awesome! Definitely too pretty to cover up - so the only option you have that I can see is to talk them into producing the rest of the body in CF...

In the less glorious world of fiberglass there is MA Shaw out of California. I have a pair of his E92 doors on the way so should have a pretty good idea of fitment soon.

The one's you're getting from MA shaw, are they framed like the Geoff Steele ones or frameless like Bimmerworlds?

Let’s file this one under: COTA!——and maybe beyond!

The last couple of months have been very busy with track logistics planning. I wanted to share what my plans are looking like at the moment.

First up: I’ve decided to participate in Global Time Attack’s 2020 Super Lap Battle at COTA on Feb 15-16 in Unlimited Class. That weekend is my 50th birthday weekend. Competing in a challenging environment at a world-class facility and then hanging out with my family in a cool town like Austin sounds like an amazing experience. And I have to thank my wife for opening the door to the whole thing.

Originally, I was hesitant to do it because I've never been to COTA. And there’s no SLB practice day, so the thought of just showing up cold and learning the track in front of everyone in the middle of a competition was not really my favorite. But the 2020 COTA calendar of events kept evolving with more and more organizers filling the calendar, and a Chin Track Days event appeared on the schedule on Feb 1-2. So, I’m going to attend the Chin event first and hopefully gain some understanding of the track prior to competing at SLB.

I’m not a gamer, but we do have a PS4 at the house. So I bought Project Cars 2 and a steering wheel/pedal set. I am practicing the video game everyday now to get my head into the flow of the track. I won’t say that I know how to drive the track now, but I can confidently tell you that I know the layout. Phew—it’s a tricky track. It will be interesting to see if the time spent on the sim was worth it.

As far as expectations of performance, I have no idea what kind of lap times to hope for. Going sub-2:20 could be a goal. Beyond that, I don’t know. One can always dream of a podium place, but lots of factors play into that. I will give it my all——I’ll have carbon doors, I’ll have practiced at the Chin event and I’ll have new slicks. I’m just hoping for decent weather. It would be disappointing to go through all the effort to sit in a big rain storm…..

Something new for me—GTA is requiring Unlimited class to run Yokohama slicks. While, I’ve been driving almost exclusively on Pirelli DH lately, I do like Yoko slicks. My fast lap at Laguna Seca was done on Yokos.

Question: What do you local Texas guys do for tire service near COTA? Yokohama will have a tire mounting rig at the event, but I’m thinking I should still have at least one set mounted and ready to go before the event. I don’t want to get caught in some AM tire crunch.

If you Texas guys are bored that weekend, come out and say hi! Currently, I’m the only BMW signed up. The sad lonely BMW….

The carbon doors are being installed by Racewerkz Engineering right now. There’s quite a bit of detail work to finalize them. Very excited to see the results.

I’m going to LA next week for a music industry trade show and to finalize the car for Texas. Hopefully Friday I can get the car from Racewerkz, and then next weekend test it at Willow Springs with Speed District. If everything is good, then I will take the car to San Diego where it will be loaded onto another trailer [along with all my wheels and tools, etc.] for transport to Texas. My friend is doing the journey with me. His race shop has a 38’ double stacker and is going to be handling the transport logistics for us.

Then——after COTA, the rig may continue heading to the East Coast to visit Road Atlanta, VIR and Watkins Glen. I want to thank SYT_Shadow, Warp10 and Thundermoose for their logistics info. Really appreciate the heads up from those guys. Most everything is already planned out for the East coast portion of the trip. But first we need to do COTA and see how that goes. If everything looks good, then perhaps we can continue East. I'll talk more about the East Coast if it becomes a reality.

So, that’s how the first half of 2020 is shaping up.

Awesome news!
I was looking at going to that particular CHIN event myself but am going to hold-off and visit COTA later in the year. I will say though that CHIN puts on excellent events and you should enjoy your time with them. LOTS of seat time the way they run their events too.
I may try to come down and watch SLB if that weekend ends up free for me. It's a quick easy trip from Dallas.
As far as shops go I figure some of the Austin people can chime in but I have heard good things about Soulspeed's shop so they may be good option/resource. Also if you're just looking at mounting tires also give OnSite Tires a call. They have a mobile truck and great service in TX and CO and I would think they're likely to be at the track that weekend as well.

There's a race shop right across the street from COTA. I think the guy that runs it is named Chris Taylor. https://m.facebook.com/ChrisTaylorRacingServices/

The weight loss is real. The doors are around 10 lbs each. Casey from Racewerkz says so far the fit is very good. But the doors don't just drop onto the car in 5 minutes. There's a fair amount of install work. Hopefully, the other two sets will be done next week and I can get my install going.

When you say "useable with the OEM door innards".......do you mean being able to install door cards? Or windows? Not sure what you're asking.

Ok, I'll tease everyone. First, the car in the picture is not my car. I know it looks like mine. But don't get confused. I would never have MCS stickers on my car!!!! mwuahahahahahaha (got ya Casey!)

(Allow me to explain----pretty much EVERY SINGLE TIME I talk to Casey at Racewerkz----EVERY......SINGLE......TIME----he finds a way to take a dig at my JRZs......so I take EVERY opportunity I can to get him back! hahahahaha)

So, this car belongs to lemanszcpm3 . We have similar builds---E90, blue, gutted, cages built by Racewerkz, similar aero, AP Racing Radi-Cals, etc. He took the lead on getting the doors fabricated and donated his doors for the molding, so he got the first set. Here is an in-process pic of the doors going on his car. ummm would it be fair for me to say that I'm just a bit excited?

Woah these are amazing! Thanks so much for sharing and all the effort that went into making this unique need!

I always hear good things about Chin. They were very nice when we emailed them asking to be in a Solo group. They put us in Intermediate Solo I. Sounds very reasonable.

Thanks for the On-Site tip. I'll check it out.

Anyway, if you can make it out to COTA at SLB, would be great to see ya!

It's been a journey of stops and starts and failed attempts to be able to get to this point. But hopefully, if anyone wants carbon doors for a sedan in the future, it should be easy to acquire them.

However, it's worth noting, they don't just drop into place in 5 minutes. They need some fabrication/finishing work to get them finalized.

Once a SuperLap Battle is done, it takes awhile for various sources to publish their photographs from the event. I found a few of my car from the November Buttonwillow event that were pretty cool. Figured I would share them here.

GTA actually mailed me a physical plaque of the first picture. It's really nice!

Thanks!

In the front, I simply run maximum camber that the Vorshlag and the strut-top hole allow. It ends up being somewhere between -3.8 and -4.1°. In my opinion from the experiences I’ve had on this platform, you need that kind of camber to save your outer edges on the front.

On the rear, I run basically stock -2.2°. Rear tire wear is perfect.

This is amazing.

Apologies if I've overlooked somewhere in the 68 pages -- what's your current mileage? VF620 with rod bearing service, anything else? Original box?

I'm pondering round 2 with my E90 as a street + track car (after going back to stock). 65k miles. But powertrain concerns. DCT was beginning to give me some concern here and there on track. Have changed fluid since.

thanks

I have had NO issues with braking.

With slicks on the cars, the car can pull 1.6G of braking force. When I put a passenger seat in the car and take a guest, no one cares about how the car accelerates, no one cares about how the car grips in corners........the one consistent universal comment I get over and over and over is, "HOLY CRAP! Your braking freaks me out!!!! I never thought we'd make it to the corner! I just thought we'd fly off track!!" (The car is in control the entire time.) So.....I'd say the braking is good.
