ESS G1 Supercharger Unboxing, Install and Dyno Results on E92 M3

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
ESS G1 Supercharger Summary
  • 579 WHP @ 8,338 RPM
  • 383 WTQ @ 7,442 RPM
  • 93 octane (E17 ethanol mixture)
  • No more S/C fluid seepage under high Gs
  • ~10-20 ft/lb gain in torque from VT2/Vortech based systems
  • Very usable power on street without unwanted torque punch
  • Intercooler bracket/placement allows clearance for aggressive tire setups

Why Supercharge?

I never really had a fast car. I mean I have a stripped E46 M3 dedicated track car that's fast on the track, but I mean like a high horsepower-fast car. I drove my cousin's F10 M5 just recently and I was blown away at the power that car has. Street driving became fun again and it felt like the first time when I drove an M3. That's when I decided I'm going to supercharge my E92. Because...life is short.

I went with the ESS G1 kit because it's the newest kit on the market. They ditched the Vortech supercharger and went with their own blower. While being lighter, the kit was making more power than their older VT2-based blowers. I get most of my work done at European Auto Source in Anaheim, CA so that's where I bought the kit and got it installed.

Unboxing

Out of the box, I got to check out the hardware in detail. I picked up the plenum and blower+bracket and honestly it wasn't as heavy as I thought. I'm not worried about weight too much and it wasn't enough to think about changing spring rates up front. What a lot of people don't realize or think about when buying S/C kits is the use for larger wheel fitment/clearance up front. If you're running an intercooled setup you'll notice the pipe routing and intake gets really close to the wheel wheel area, on the driver side especially, and a benefit of running the ESS G1 intercooler bracket is that it allows for more clearance to fit wider tires. My plan? 285/30/18 square.

The pulleys! The kit comes with 2 pulleys: 91 octane and 93 octane. I chose the 93 pulley for the initial install because I wanted to see what max power is. I'm here in CA so we don't have 93 octane, but I mixed 91 octane and some E85 ethanol. On a 16.1 gallon tank it's about 1.5 gallons of E85 on a full tank. Also equates to about E17 blend.

Installation

Installation took a few hours, but it was pretty straight forward and 100% bolt on.

Dyno Testing & Results
  • 579 WHP @ 8,338 RPM
  • 383 WTQ @ 7,442 RPM
  • 93 octane (E17 ethanol mixture)
  • 82.61°F ambient air temp
  • 34.51% Humidity

So after I strapped on and did a few pulls, my car went into limp mode. Turns out one of my throttle actuators went bad! Super unfortunate timing, but I'm glad it happened at the shop. I had to get them replaced on the spot and I pretty much had not choice, but to replace both. The plenum we just installed had to come back out. Thanks to EAS for squeezing in time to take care of this after all the work already done!

Summary

Life is short. Have (responsible) fun.

Fantastic, I’m also running a couple gallons of E85 with 91 so I can run an 8psi pulley. Enjoy it!

thank you for the writeup

I'm really impressed with this new ESS kit! Even better than their old ones that were already the best

I remember calculating the net weight gain and it was under 80lb including fluids. Can't complain about 80lb taking you from 350 to 580whp!

I'd like to supercharger my E92 but enjoy the Karbonius induction noise too much... maybe one day

I just joined the g1 club about a month ago. Been really enjoying the car even at the higher elevation here in NM. Install went super smooth besides two things I can into.

1. I didn't get the included hardware to mount the ground wire for the inter cooler pump as the instructions said but I found another place so this was nothing to worry about.

2. The second thing is and curious if you could check yours is the bolt right below the radiator hose that mounts the supercharger bracket to the motor (have to press the hose to see the bolt). I ended up bottoming out the bolt and it didn't press against the supercharger bracket. I had to take 5mm off the bolt to make it work properly. Not sure if the engine just had a slightly shorter bolt depth on my engine or the bracket was milled just a little to deep for that bolt.

One of the best cars I've driven to date is my brothers old ESS VT625 M3 with 6 speed. It's an absolute monster and the sounds are glorious. The F80 can't come close. Enjoy it in health my friend!

It's a DYNOJET using correction factor STD 5. It should be dyno difference.

Just took a quick glance and I don't know if I'm looking at the same bolt, but it appears to be flush on the bracket. You're talking about the bottom-most bolt on the blower bracket?

Not the one used for the alternator. Its the one about a half an inch below the water hose for the radiator. Wish I had my car with me to today and I could take a picture.

Clearance is kind of tight. Next time the bumper is off I'll try to inspect it. I basically checked out the install at EAS while they're doing it and everything seemed okay? Did you contact ESS Tuning about it?

Just added a photo to my last post. Its the g3 bracket but they use that same bolt location. You can open the hood and just push the hose back a bit to see it.

I got my kit from EAS and told them about it but didnt seem to be issue however you dont see the bolt once its tight unless you press back the hose.

Check your bolt locations. Sounds like you have the different M6 bolt lengths mixed around.

Thanks for sharing the review. I hear it's really quiet, is that true. Kinda liked the fact that you could hear the blower in the VT2.

Edit: just watched the video. You can still hear it!!
