Ok to proceed with this gear oil?

Hi, going to change my transmission fluid wanted to make sure this GL5 fluid is ok to use. Manual 6spd.

Yes, it is fine. I used the same stuff in my manual transmission when I last changed fluid.

It is OE equivalent fluid.

It is not. It's not synthetic. That's why it's so cheap. Plus, you want a GL4 fluid (yellow metal safe) for manual tranny. GL5 (extreme pressure molybdenum fm) is for diff.

The EP additives in GL5 will eat away at the soft yellow metals in manual tranny's synchros.

It's hard to get bmw mtf2 (gl4) any more, and the OE Pentosin is NLA, but pentosin's FFL4 (DCT fluid) is backwards compatible with manual tranny needing gl4 75w/80wt. I've used both pentosin mtf2 and the ffl4 fluid and there is no difference in feel.

There are a couple other gl4 full synthetics out there, though most are a little too heavy at 75w90. Amsoil has one. Redline. There are other options in europe like Elf, fuchs, ravenol.

I don't know where you get your information from... but Febi Bilstein is a OEM manufacturer - maybe not for the M3 but other models and manufacturers.

The fluid meets all BMW manual transmission spec for the M3.

It is made in Germany and OEM certified for these BMW specs:
BMW MTF LT-1
BMW MTF LT-2
BMW MTF LT-3
BMW MTF LT-4

I used to run Redline's suggested D4 ATF. The car doesn't shift any differently.

Thanks everyone, I bought it because ECS said it's compatible but I wasn't 100% sold. I ended up going with Redline MTL which is GL4.

If you follow Redline's recommendation for the E9x M3, it is D4 ATF.

Regardless what you go with, all these meet OEM specifications and work fine. I went with Febi this time. I change transmission fluid every 10-15k miles so it's not a big deal.

I replaced my manual trans with this fluid couple months ago, car ran fine. I did reach out to Febi/Bilstein and here's what they said.

"Thank you for your purchase of febi products. febi 40580 can absolutely be used in your transmission. There have been many advances in both transmissions and in the gear oils that minimize any problems with synchro rings. The only currently valid API transmission oil classification is GL-5 as GL-4 is outdated and new oils cannot be tested to GL-4 specifications.'

I will replace this in the future with some full synthetic fluids.

The Febi fluid meets all BMW M3 OEM specifications and it's a major OEM manufacturer. There's no need to overthink it.

I have run both types of red line tranny fluids. MTL is just a little thicker so it is better for hot climates. Both worked just fine.

If BMW approves it, it is fine. Your transmission is not going to explode because you put in an approved fluid.

As I said, overthinking it. It's a maintenance fluid and it'll get changed again in a year.

I bet you only run BMW Twin Turbo Power motor oil because that's what the BMW dealer sells?

The Liqui Moly MTF 5100 is GL4
