How much HP does my 2008 M3 make with 166,000 miles?
2008 E92 M3 with 166,000 miles and original rod bearings using Dyno Dynamics dyno and 94 degrees outside.

Glad to see a high mileage car still on original rod bearings! what is your oil change interval and what oil do you use?

It depends on what time of year. During the winter I've been running 5w-40 Pennzoil platinum euro formula. During the summer 10w-60. I run my car the full 15,000 miles. I know it sounds crazy but I'm an engineer by trade and I understand the 15,000 limit is probably more of a mid spec. I guess you can change it sooner if you'd like but I consider that just wasting money, not like its so expensive anyways. If people go to the dealer I know I had to go one time in between moving and they tried to charge me $310. I argued them down to $220. I buy the Moly Liquid Kit that has the Mann filter and 9 quarts of 10w-60 on Amazon for like $110. Obviously I'm topping off my oil every few thousand miles like the manual says. Nothing special or out of the ordinary. I'm sure driving it every day helps too. People call me crazy for running my car for so long in between changes but my argument is "Why would BMW put a 15,000 oil countdown in your car if it wasn't design to go 15,000 miles between oil changes?" I've even noted that the harder you drive your car the faster that countdown moves. I'd like to say BMW engineers are idiots but BMW has been in the game for about 100 years now. I'd trust what they recommend but I also know what I can get away with too. I know the car does NOT need 10w-60 but I still run it in the summer anyways. I like the oil designed more for colder weather for the winter for cold starts

If you trust the BMW engineers then you should be following their recommended 7,500 mile interval bulletin they put out in 2013. They changed it from 15k to 7.5k so you will want to start following that. Reason being that the oil is too far broken down and contaminated by the time it hits 15k. True story. Also, make sure if you ever sell her to tell the next owner that you have followed the 15k intervals as opposed to 3k to 7.5k as most of us do.

OP consider the 15,000 interval bullshit to keep active warranty oil changes less frequent during the warranty period. Like someone else said they dropped the 15,000 down to 7,500 because they KNEW warranties were up and the proper recommendation should be released to avoid claims. Do your own changes and consider dropping down to 5 or 7,000. If you were to look in a BMW motor that followed the 15,000 spec at 60,000 the inside will have a yellowish orange tint from oil residue and buildup burnt in.

This proves my theory. High mileage cars with the original rod bearings are not being driven very hard. If he's using the count down and it's going to 15K that means he can't be driving the car very hard.
He even said it, the harder you drive the quicker it counts down. |

Look into FCP Euro's free replacement program. Buy once and you get free replacements for the life of the car. I'd change it every 5k, but I'm lazy so I do 7.5k, using FCP's program.

this is true. Its lasted this long after I bought it used at 82k miles. So not bad for a used car at all I think!

The 7500 mike recommendation was for the newer turbo cars, not the e9x M cars, isn’t it?
I change mine every 7500 miles but just wanted to clarify the above. OP: congrats on the mileage. Very impressive. I succumbed to the hype and had my rod bearings changed and got the oil pan stripped and alignment off for the trouble. Hope the main bearings don’t go. |
