If it's any consolation, its true name is Shell Helix Ultra...which is kinda better.

I think hes referring to the "twin turbo" on the engine cover, snd bmws freshly labelled "twin turbo" 10-60 oil..

Many performance cars come with "twin scroll" aka dual exhaust turbine turbos...thats what lets these tiny turbos push a ton of pressure with the right fuel yet very little lag and tiny i/c's.

If not, idk where BMW gets off calling it a twin turbo power plant.Even if its a twin scroll thats still a blatent lie.

BMW isn't calling their cars twin turbo. I believe the "twin power turbo" is a trademarked name by BMW to generally describe their turbo technology for its cars. It's marketing, and if you're talking about it then it is working. Although I do agree it is kind of fast and furious-y.

On topic: The TWS 10w-60 on Amazon, is the old Euro version, no?

For $10/qt with free shipping, I say go for it.

Though you can also get the new Shell stuff for about $11.50/qt from Tischer...

F80/F82 M's are indeed twin turbo.

N54's were twin turbo.

Current N55's are twin scroll single turbo.

Thanks for the clarification. I would usually know these things but things have been hectic. I'm going to look into the details and configuration tonight out of curiousity...

API SN service class, the current spec which supersedes the previous spec of SM. This means it is a fairly modern formula.

"Introduced in October 2010 for 2011 and older vehicles, designed to provide improved high temperature deposit protection for pistons, more stringent sludge control, and seal compatibility. API SN with Resource Conserving matches ILSAC GF-5 by combining API SN performance with improved fuel economy, turbocharger protection, emission control system compatibility, and protection of engines operating on ethanol-containing fuels up to E85."

Castrol switched to titanium dithiocarbamate (marketing speak is just "titanium") as an anti-wear additive recently.

Here's an article that describes the benefits:
http://www.azonano.com/news.aspx?newsID=6907

tl;dr: the TWS on Amazon is the newest formula, not the old stuff

Dan beat me to it, but you can also refer to this thread:

The oil from Amazon should have that gold/amber look like the one on the left.

The packaging is actually slightly different than both shown in the article...However as dparm stated it is the "API SN: formulsa.

It says "European formula" on front and "recommended for BMW M models on back.....(Sell Pics)

My question is....Is this close enough use to top off sbout 3/4s of a Liter..beining its the same viscosity...

I have anoil change as part of CPO about 3k miles...is this alright or can the variance of additives and detergents cause foaming or other issyed. Thus far only the BMW label oil had been used...

Totally fine for top-offs. It's an API-certified oil, which means it must be mixable with other API oils.

Is this not the same castrol I can get from ECS or tischer?

Sure thing. Amazon edge is on the right, edge professional is on the left. They appear to be identical. Hoping the Amazon oil is acceptable for our motors as I just put 8.5qt in last night lol.

Your good. According to dparm, and others, not only is it ok to use and even mix with other API certified oils, but its a little better than the older formula...

IIRC Edge Professional is the branding for dealers/shops/OEMs, and Edge is the consumer (off the shelf) branding.

If you have the inclination to send a sample of the Amazon Castrol TWS Edge into Blackstone I know we'd all appreciate it.

I also wanted to point out this post from the Edge Professional TWS vs TWS Motorsport thread: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showpos...9&postcount=22

It makes me wonder if Amazon just picked up some pallets of the European marketed consumer version of Edge Professional.

I also came across another oil to add to the conversation, Castrol Edge Titanium FST 10w-60. I can't find it for sale in the U.S. though and notably it is not marketed as 'TWS' but I did see somewhere that 'TWS' just stands for Ten W Sixty anyway.

I just changed my oil and used Amazon Castrol TWS Edge this time. Ironically I noticed this sticker in the engine bay while doing the oil change:
