No sound from radio

I have a 2006 325I M sport that the radio stoped playing and was making a loud poping noise. I ordered a used stock radio off of ebay and when installed, still no sound. The display is working now and it shows what song is playing on the station, but no sound. I ordered an amp from ebay and did match it exactly with the stock amp numbers and still no sound. I did not save the orginal radio, so I dont know what the numbers were on it. I stripped the wires coming out of the radio and hooked up a speaker to it and no sound, I did the same out of the amp and nothing there. I have confirmed I have power to the amp and ground. We put a scanner on the car and we can communicate with the radio and there are no fault codes on it. I pulled the seat, consol, carpet etc and traced the wires, with nothing obvous found. Is there any other component that I do not know about that could be the problem? Is there any way I can find out what my stock radio numbers were so I can try and match it up with another unit? What am I doing wrong?
