Here's what is needed in order to make cars faster & more fuel efficient:
- less moving parts in the engine and less friction among those moving parts = quieter engines, hence addition of fake sounds. - turbochargers to increase power & fuel efficiency = loss of sporty exhaust sound & quieter intake sound, hence addition of fake sounds. - stiffer chassis/suspension bushings with minimal give so as to handle better at faster speeds & return faster lap times = loss/decrease in chassis feel/feedback - just feels too stiff unless driven aggressively. Car companies have to make cars that comply with stringent regulations & meet market expectations, all while being cost effective & sustainable. People on this forum (myself included) are not representative of general market expectations! You can only do so much when BMW builds almost all of its line up based on just 2 platforms. Now, look at BRZ/86 twins - feels like a cheaper/lighter/slower version of e46 chassis - barely sold enough to justify a second generation. Now imagine putting a more powerful engine in it & add some sound deadening (all that's needed to make BRZ perfect), but that'll add weight & likely need stiffer suspension to handle the extra power to get reasonable lap times = a heavy car with less feel & more stiffness. I personally prefer my e92 M3 than F8x M4 & it might be the last M car for me... we'll see! |

I rented a F80 M3 for 24 hours because I was extremely curious what it was like being a e93 6mt owner. I absolutely love my M3 and just wanted to know if I was missing anything. The F80 was Better than I thought but just very different. I can’t really articulate it well but I would take the E9X any day of the week. My son and I actually made a short video regarding my thoughts.

My E39 M5 which a lot of people consider one of the best M drivers cars, feels completely boring and "soul-less" to me. In stock form, it's really overrated honestly, it feels like a heavy old car with lazy steering that's decently quick. My E92 M3s sure makes nice V8 noises and steering feels a bit more natural and quicker but it's not a car I would say is full of "soul" either. It feels heavy, a bit less precise, and more like a GT car. I would say it's more fun to drive than my E39 M5. A stock E9x M3 is probably the most exciting of the trio. My F80 when it was stock was a bit sterile I admit, I think the combination of big torque/power, not enough traction and an overly intrusive MDM mode really killed the fun for me, at first... After a few suspension bolt-ons, better tires, Euro MDM coding, and a tune, my F80 is easily my favorite M car by far. I get more smiles per mile on the F80 than I ever had in any other car. If you keep your car stock, the E9x M3 will feel the most exciting. Once modded, the F8x is absolutely superior, by a large margin. Exhaust note has always been a weak area of the F8x but with the new equal length systems being released, no longer the case. Active Autowork EL system on an F82. |

Wow that actually sounds great! First time I have ever said that about an F8x. Really though, great job to AA for developing that system. I hope burbles/flatulence now die a quick and painful death.

I own both I have a beautiful E92 M3 in Melbourne Red and an F80 M3 in Ruby Red Metallic. First off if the car didn't have a tune it, you're not really feeling the potential of that car.
I love them both they don't seem only one generation apart. My impressions are the S65 is special, the E92 Steering is special compared to the F80. The F80 is faster, the interior is much better, the car is more modern looking and has better options on it, that you use everyday. I feel like the F80 is actually very tossable though too, I love the predictability of the E92 M3 on the track and can't wait to get the F80 on the track. Both great cars, I plan on keeping them both. I just think the S65 is a special motor never to be repeated and it makes the E92 that much more desirable. |

No I did not! Lol. Luckily he enjoys the car and since he's the one that bought it that's all that matters.
