I called a local appliance store today and had a fax machine screeching in my ear. I was like, "WTF??" I guess some places still use them.

Three, the landline is the primary means of my alarm system communicating to the monitoring station. Four, I share the landline service between my two homes via my own VoIP system.

As far as faxing, I use faxing as a better means of keeping communications with various entities more secure.
Can't argue with that! I had not considered this.

However.....

I'm still amazed that people use these. In my experiences, it's mostly (not all) mom & pop owned businesses and the owners (or the employees) haven't figured out email yet. I have 3 local companies that I refuse to do business with solely because they want everything (technical drawings, blueprints, bill of material, etc.) faxed to them. Pass. If I have to print, then fax, then re-fax, then re-fax.....you've already lost my business.

I still use emails when possible to send documents and such if security is not of the utmost. I know I can password protect the document but that requires extra steps also and the assumption the receiver on their end has the same corresponding software to unpack it. For documents I have to fill out by hand, it's just easier for me to send via fax without going through the extra steps of scanning and then sending.

I've grown more and more paranoid as my tenure in IT grows. This is part of the driver of me using old tech. Not all new tech is good.

Many moons ago. I saw a couple in a car. The steering wheel shifted over to the right and someone else started driving. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Clearly that tech didn't make it.

Apparently Mercedes have revived it but only on the Unimog. Not an ideal daily driver by any stretch.

MotorWeek Porsche 944 Vs RX7

Betamax tape
First gen RX7 is still great to me.

Apple LISA was way ahead of its time both in price and technology.
Gamers spend $10-$20K on gaming machines these days. You can also spec a modern Apple Pro for $30K these days.

Betamax was a better media that professionals used for the longest time. But in the end it died well before VHS.

We can also add Apple Newton to the mix. But it was a start to modern smart phones and tablets

Fax machines are also on its way out. But I still have one!

In healthcare it's still the norm for transferring medical records. There is no one standardized EMR, so information that's not in paper form will get lose.

Totally! This is especially true for external organizational record sharing. It is pretty neat to see the slow progression of radiology and cardiology imagery shift into the cloud for transfers.

Remember this "advance" document duplication machine that was a precursor to the photocopier?

If you do, you probably remember the smell of that purple ink.

The business I work for relies heavily on fax and it's such a pain in the ass. Confirmations don't mean that it doesn't end up in fax space somewhere. It's a major pain in the ass.

3D HD TVs. They came and disappeared fast!

We've still got one in a spare room and I'll still pop in Avatar or Guardians of the Galaxy in 3D, put on those glasses and really enjoy it.

I'm not seeing pagers here. Those used to be such a hilarious status symbol in the hospitals - all the new residents 'proud' of their fancy 'HEY - I'm a DOCTOR' gear (that made them even more useful as work drones) but then being outdone by the gangbangers who would come in with 4 or 5 of the very newest and hottest models on their belt. Then they would rapidly find out that if they showed them in public everyone assumed they were the drug dealers. Thank god there isn't a way to reach out and bug people instantly for a callback anymore.....

OK, not seeing them b/c wasn't loading all the pics (the screen on this flip phone is so small ).

For a few years in the 1990's (before handheld cell phones took off), pagers were big in high school circles. "Beep me" was a huge part of the dating ritual among teens in those times, so that girls could discreetly call their suitors back from their home landline phones without arousing curiosity from their parental units.....
