Unless I've missed some detail that you are specifically taking issue with, I think if you took a poll, most everyone who has CA does this.

For non-North American cars, you can actually set it to automatically lock after the key goes out of range (or maybe its after a specified time -can't remember). Unfortunately, this is not supported in the US, probably due to legal liability concerns.

True petrolheads never read the owner's manual.

Ah, sweet. I'll have to do that when I get the car back...

As for wondering about a retrofit, according to realoem the non-CA handles are indeed the same front and back, so you can mechanically fit the CA handles in the back for an extra $200 each (plus painting them)...actually hooking them up would probably require hacking on the main wiring harnesses, and even then there might be some roadblocks in the body control bus.
To me it's not a big deal to grab the front door for a second before opening the back door, but if I ever have an excuse to open up the door panels I'll take a look at the wiring out of curiosity :-)

For me it's an issue cause I am holding my kid in my arms a lot of the time and his toys and shot in the other. So I can just be a little frustrating. But not worth hundreds of dollars...

What's wrong with the solution of setting all doors to unlock via CA? I realize there is still the inconvenience of walking up the front door first vs. just being able to go straight to the back door. But it is a lot better than having to fish for the key, right?

You need a free hand to open the door once you get to the car, so it doesn't seem like a big deal to grab the front handle and then step back to the rear handle
Of course I'm still used to using the key fob on my E39 like a caveman :-)

It's not a big deal to grab the front handle first. It's just a slight annoyance. Especially for those of us who had 4-door CA previously in E60s and X5s.

Coming out of an E60 M5, I miss the rear-door comfort access, the heated steering wheel in the winter, the front PDC, the MUCH higher quality materials inside, but I sure don't miss those extra few hundred pounds!

Right, so you can get full leather (including the dashboard) in the m3?

I miss my E60 M5... I don't miss the extra 300 lbs, and I don't miss 10 mpg, (although 15 mpg isn't a huge improvement!)

I miss the HUD, F&R PDC, rear door CA, and the sound of that flat plane V10...

no I'm just saying Novillo leather is Novillo leather, the aluminum trim is the same quality, same nav, I don't see a difference in the quality.
