People's thoughts on BBS versus HRE? The cost is fairly equivalent (BBS are a few hundred more)

I'm not looking to track car, I just want high quality and good looks. Sticking with 19's and going Gloss Black.

I was reading previous threads and seems like most people regard BBS as king and HRE not close.

Other options would be ADV or MORR.

BBS and HRE are #1 in my opinion. You cannot go wrong with either, it just comes down to a matter of preference from you if you like the curved lines or the 'sqaurey' looking lines.

MORR is upping its game everyday, at this point if they were to have been around as long as the other 2 then they would also be number one on this list.

ADV1? Wouldn't run them myself, I'm sure 90% of this forum would agree.

*Rays, Advans, Work, Apex* are some other brands that could do no wrong. Also, my order of wheels chosen are based on the OP's selection before you fan boys jump in and say Rays are #1 or whatever it may be.

NEVER include ADV as a wheel option.
BBS and VOLK are the top wheels in the game.

They are both beautiful wheels. The HRE's are comparably light as well and finished beautifully. It would be a tough choice.

The thing that makes HRE the superior wheel manufacturer is that they are truly custom. Try calling BBS or Volk and work with them on custom offsets or colors. Pay over $2k a wheel for an FI and you can count on your left hand the available color, you'll have a few left over fingers too. Yeah you can spend another couple hun a wheel to have them finished by somebody luke IND, but its not a factory finish and often this voids the manufacturer warranty. For truly custom wheels, there is only one.....HRE, end of story!

I'm a huge HRE fan but they are not at the same level as BBS when it comes to the quality of their forging. The reason that I would (and have) gone with HRE is the ability to customize size, offset, and finish. I have also chosen a less expensive HRE wheel (R40's) which are significantly cheaper than BBS FI's. With BBS you are limited to a couple of colors and their chosen offsets. Unfortunately the offsets currently offered for the 19" BBS FI frankly suck (19 x 9.5 et 28 and 19 x 10.5 et 23). The fronts are too conservative and the rears are too aggressive for 295's. All that being said, I would have a hard time spending $2k+ on any wheel and if I did I would want the very best which would steer me towards BBS.... But I wouldn't want the 19" FI's because the offsets suck. The 18" BBS FI's are available in better offsets.

What do you mean "quality of their forgings"? Have you seen metalurgical analysis of samples? What do the shear stresses and ultimate yields look like? HRE's forgings are NOT Chinese like some have suggested. They are US made blanks.

I said quality of their forging - meaning quality of their forging process. I have not seen the analysis of HRE's samples and honestly don't have the skill-set to properly interpret them if I did. See the links below (and yes I do realize that the facility IND visited in the link below is casting wheels - not forging which is done in BBS's Japanese facility). BBS controls their process from start to finish - including producing the alloy used in their wheels. HRE buys quality US made blanks and mills them to the wheel design. My understanding is that BBS (and Volk) use a different process (and more expensive and superior process) which includes pressing the forged blank into it's rough shape and then only milling out the details.

To be clear - I'm a huge fan of HRE, have been to their facility, think they produce the best custom wheels, and wouldn't choose any other custom wheel over HRE.

HRE P101 looks great in any color in my opinion. I don't care for the BBS FI in black because it takes away much of the small details that make it a special wheel. I LOVE them in Matte Titanium though. If you're looking to go a bit lower on price, Morr is a great way to go; their wheels are high quality and they have great customer service. And for ADV1? Let's just say I'll put them on my car when I want to kill myself.

BBS FI's!!

Love the HRE's we have had, but the FI's are a notch better.....IMO

Both are great wheels, with BBS being the original design of the 2 and slightly superior in its forging/engineering IMO. If you are going for a standard fitment and color I would say BBS all the way. The HRE is a great option if you are looking for custom size, offset and color but want the look of the BBS FI

Both are amazing and are at the top of their class. As some noted, HRE allows custom finish and sizes and are made in the USA.

BBS FI are amazing wheels which sort of established them as the expected wheel set up for the more high class functional builds. So if you want to do something a bit less common but at the same standard, HRE would be the choice.

IMO i would never buy those style rims they will be impossible to keep clean with that crapy 2 piece gap.

If you want to look into a lightweight product, I would recommend to check our VS70 Competition or our VS52 Competition. For comparison, the VS70C is TUV rated at 690kg-corner and weights 20.8lbs in a 20x9.5" F10 M5 application, and the BBS FI is rated at 650kg-corner and weights in at 19.7lbs, the HRE P101 20x9.5" will weigh in at 21.8lbs in a comparable fitment.
