(100%) E9X M3 241E DME Flash (DIY)

Hello guys,

I have done the 241E (7854376) DME Flash yesterday and i can tell you this mine being 60E 08 version (I-Level - E89X-08-03-530), 240E did a lot of improvements.

It is not just apprx +20HP gain but also alot smoother cold start and more responsive Throttle on lower rpms.

It is very easy process if you have following tools.

1- Winkfp with updated DATEN (SP-Daten V67)
2- ICOM Cable or BimmerGeeks Pro K+DCAN or Expert K+DCAN cable
3- Stable Battery charger (I have 40Amp constant battery charger)

Steps :

1- Hook up the Battery Charger
2- Connect the OBD cable to car and PC
3- Buckle Up Driver seat belt
4- Roll Down the Driver Window
5- Close the Door
6- Turn on the ignition (Do not Start the Car)
7- Open the Winkfp
8- Select Comfort Mode
9- Select Update ECU
10- Select Module (MSS60)
11- Write your 17 Digit Vin
12- Select Prog ZUSB
13- Click Ok on the Pop Up screen (Which says The Users info field can still be programmed 62 times)
13- It will go 0-100 fast at the first stage than will start Flashing. (About 10 min)
14- Then another screen will pop up saying the same thing (The Users info field can still be programmed 62 times) Click OK again
15- It will take about 30 second to do another 0-100
16- ZUSB-Update programming OK message appears
17- Fuel Pump will be activated and you will have some errors stored in the ECUs. Mine is MT so i only got DSC Malfunction on iDrive and Cruise Control Symbol with Exclamation Mark on the KOMBI. After clearing the ECU Errors either with INPA or ISTA, should be all set.

Do NOT attempt with regular DCAN cable if you do not want to fail on DME Update.

I used ICOM NEXT CH Clone (Quality One) and works like a charm!

I tried having my dealer do this for me and they refused. Said they would only if I was running into issues.

My dealer also never would update the software. I have the original 2008 one.

I can buy the cable online but where do I get the software for running this?

Well when i used to have CCC, they updated the CCC but not the whole car?

I was told that when dealer needs to do updates they do the entire vehicle. But i guess that's not the case for me. I have retrofitted CCC to CIC properly and iLeveled my vehicle from 08 to 11 with FRM3+JBE3. Because i kept all the previous process and screenshot i was able to see the previous iLevel values so i can see that i was 60E.

But now everything almost updated! And car feels really good.

Yes believe they have to do all the modules once started. I updates mine at the dealer right after I bought it, paid couple of hundred bucks or so. Since then had it updated once or twice when the dealer have been trying to track issues like the EDC. I think BS they "should not update without an issue".

I want to do this. Pretty sure my DME isn't up to date being an 2008 car.

Trying to learn this software stuff. I ordered a cable so waiting for it to come in.
Found this youtube vid below, is this a good start to attempt this flash once I get all the downloads going?

I asked my dealer to update my DME given it's a 08, but they refused saying that there's a small probability of ECU getting messed up and killing the car. How much truth is there in this? When I called other Indys they were happy to give this around $100

Is this update essentially the same as flashing a map with tuning software. I have a new engine after my old one spun a rod. i had a stage 2 tune flashed on the old engine and reverted back to a supposedly stock flash with my new engine, however, i want to ensure that what i am flashing is stock. Would flashing the 241 update accomplish that?

All tuners uses latest version of the DME before they tune. So ur flashing guy must have 241E as a stock on his SW. So you should be fine. And please use stock SW. It has all the best configuration to keep the engine as perfect as possible.

I am getting Catless Xpipe and i will just disable the Cat and cold start on 241E. Thats it!

So all you need to complete this is the cable and the two downloads above? Then just follow your procedure?

Also,

Can you remove cold start with this downloaded software?

so is flashing a daten file,241e daten file in this case, through winkfp, the same as flashing a map file through tuner app? I thought a map file and a daten file had different functions. For instance, i thought a daten file updated the dme base OS and the map updated the engine config like afr, stuff like that. Sorry for asking stupid questions, i am just trying to understand how this works and ensure im running on stock map or sw.

Is there a way to find out the current version of the DME without going through the steps?
