The original engine in my 08 burned a 1/2 quart every 2000 miles, but since I had the engine replaced with the latest factory engine it has not burned any oil whatsoever... I have put about 5k miles on the new engine since I did the break in oil change and the gauge still shows at the full mark...

I did not baby this engine through the break-in period either... I drove it hard after about 300 miles on the new engine... I redlined it at least once per day through the whole break-in period, and then performed the break-in oil change at the 800 mile mark... I just don't like BMW's 1200 mile break in period,,,,

I drive my 09 fairly hard. I add a quart every 3k miles "ish" i just did a socal to seattle trip in 3 days, burned half a quart. 3k miles there.. With Avg speed of 90mph (on the nav) depends on driving habits imo. I've driven easy for 7k miles and didn't burn any oil.

Resurrecting old thread. I have only had my car for about 4k miles now. The engine has almost 80k miles on it. It seems to be burning 1qt every 2k miles which seems on the high side. Have not owned long enough to know if consistent. Previous owner if I recall told me 1qt between oil changes. I tend to drive it pretty hard once the oil is up to temp so it's unknown if it would be better, worse, or the same if I didn't drive it very hard. PPI said they didn't notice any leaks.

Previous owner tracked the car 6 times I think so I doubt he drove it like grandma. He had the car for about 50k miles. Not sure what the two owners before that did to the car.

If you read the owner’s manual, you will learn that your oil consumption is within spec.

I can't find any official reference to what BMW says is normal. I've seen on the forums people saying BMW says its 1L every 650 miles all the way to 1L every 1500 miles but with no official documentation to back that up.

Every 650 seems excessive. Is your engine bay clean enough for you to see any staining from burnt oil? Is there any spotting where you park? You should be able to see evidence of a leak if you get under the front end. Look for residue.
I used to have to add a qt every 1000 miles or so but it was due to weepy valve cover gaskets. Since having them replaced, I haven't needed to add any at all. Albeit, I only drive about 3000 miles a year.

M3's are just oil burners, Don't stress yourself out.

Try switching to motul 10w60, I did this and got positive results. My M3 car has a VAC low compression motor paired with a VF supercharger, it uses a quart every 700ish miles. This number has gone up with the motul.

Also in Bmw's TSB they say it's considered normal for the s65 to be consuming a quart per 600 miles.

Normal is relative. You need to look at changes in consumption. Some motors consume oil, some do not. Neither is a bad thing.

Yea....at that rate you wouldn't need an oil change. You'd have fresh enough oil at all times.

Basically every 2,000 miles you'd have poured in 50% new oil.

When I pour 9L on my oil change, the digital gauge goes right in the middle. Is this normal or should it be at the Full Mark?

My car's oil consumption pattern is interesting... my 6MT does burn some oil when I go for a highway drive in 6th gear, but I have not had any oil consumption issue revving the hell out of the engine on racetracks. You would think it would be the opposite.

The steady high way travel seems to be burning most oil, seen various reports on this and experienced the same myself. I'd say "normal".

Mine was closer to full the last change I did a month ago. New filter too, ofc. Let both sumps drain fully, engine & oil were warm.

I used to consume roughly 1/2 liter every 500-600 miles (so around 1-1.2K per liter). Especially if you are driving freeway miles, long runs at 60 mph++ will do it. However, I then switched off the Power button and it seems to have dramatically lowered the oil consumption.

Of course I don't drive daily to work anymore post-pandemic...but oil consumption with the Power button off is closer to 1500 per 1/2 liter (or 3K per liter).

I have almost 225000 miles and the car has never used even one liter for the whole time between oil changes.

I seem to be about half a liter every 2,000 to 2,500 miles, but i also have some weeping at the valve cover gaskets, so oil loss is not all due to burn.
