Same as the weight difference between a supercharger and no supercharger

As others have mentioned a stroker s65 is the way to go. The larger size and weight of the s85 will take away from the handling and it also does not have the same rev capability.
Not the same rev capability? What? 8250 rpm isn't exactly a Yugo engine. And as I mentioned earlier, about a 30kg difference.

i have contacted tony. I found out that it is true. You can connect both engines to the e90 six speed. This made things easier for me. Im thinking if engines are about the same but needing some more fabrication and labor time, I would do the swap. I cant do the stroker on my current engine, seems the oil pump failed because it looked like no oil went to my engine.

This happened the day I came back from mfest in Las Vegas. I drove 80-85 the entire way. When I opened my engine I saw my crankshaft fused or melted to the block that cause shavings to go through the entire engine.
This is all sad news as I only had the car for a little over a year. Bought it from someone off this forum in San Deigo.

what do you mean no oil? Was there a leak or puncture of the oil pan that caused oil loss? Was it just underfilled? I hope you measured the oil volume remaining before you opened up the engine. And did you get any warning about low oil before the engine went kaputz?

So why would that prevent you from boring and stroking the motor.

If the crank is seized to the block the mains are likely unsalvageable

i am currently opening the engine to see if i can still save it. Maybe I can plan to save this engine as a back up and build it. but i really like the unique v10 idea

I wouldn't want you to get the wrong idea about the electronics are the same. We require different data log configurations for our track cars on E92 M3 and E60 M5. We data log directly from the CAN bus. The MSS65 and MSS60 CAN bus data is very different and I am safe to say they are not compatible with each other.

That means anybody who wants to put an S85 into an E92 would need to create a bridge between the two and translate MSS65 CAN traffic to E92 chassis and visa versa. Making matters more complicated, many CAN messages used by the E92 chassis aren't output by the MSS65, and the ones that are common don't appear at the same CAN address and in some cases don't have the same format either.

I hope this helps, wouldn't want you to get into a project only to discover it won't work like you thought.

so what caused the failure in the first place? finding that out i believe is quite important to know if there are any design flaws in the engine or its components that caused this oil starvation.

This was touched on earlier. The CAN signals may have different ID's due to slight architecture differences and things like DCT vs 6 MT, but MOST of the wiring is the same in the car (IAT, fuel pump, injectors, etc, etc..). He simply has to use an MSS65 DME. It's more or less plug and play, it will require a few changes/additions for the addition of two cylinders. Ideally the engine harness from an S85 should be used. Running the S85 on an MSS60 DME would be more trouble than it's worth.

Anything you hope to get out of the s85 can be accomplished with a stroked s65. Except for the bragging rights of saying you got a v10
The S65 is a very good sounding engine, but the V10 is straight up exotic. something the S65 cant REALLY touch... so thats something else

I thought about doing this but I figured the cost to install/ troubleshoot it would be too much compared to just replacing it. I found a used s65 short block with low miles for 4k.

If it's not your only car I would be patient and something will pop up
If anything you can get a new short block from BMW for 15k (getbmwparts.com)
