Isn't that the old style cap?

I've only had issues with a bit of oil leaking after being at the track

update:

my new (old style) cap started weeping again around the filler neck. Took off, cleaned, relubed and haven't had an issue in a couple thousand miles, but it is def a shitty design. From what someone else said, simply bending the arms slightly will put more force on the gasket and prob work 100%

Mine leaked at one point but nowhere near as bad as post #6. I found that flipping the cap upside down (all the lettering is upside down when looking into the engine bay) stopped the leaking, I also cleaned the area very well to see if the leaking continue and I haven't had an issue yet. I believe I have the newer design not sure, post 6 has a different style than me.

My cap is same as #6, the one on #20 is different, may be a newer version. I have opened mine several times to top up and during oil change. I don't know what can cause a such spill/splash like #6.

That engine bay needs a steam clean ...

Someone pointed me to this thread after I posted a DIY of what I did to fix this.

Here is my DIY.

Just got email notification on this.

Just an update on my situation:

Been a couple of years now on the double gasket with sealer. I have had no issues with it at all. No leakage, several dealer oil changes, they haven't messed it up either.

Good luck!

I got an oil change recently and started to notice a burning sort of smell only for a brief moment while driving. I read this thread at work and started to wonder. Lo and behold, I popped the hood when I got home and there appears to be very slight leakage around the cap area (looks black, probably the root of the smell). So what's the verdict? Keep the cap, order a new (but older style) cap, order a new style cap?

Aside from the smell are there any harmful effects of a small oil leak (aside from the inconvenience of having to top off)?

Would love to know as well. Mine isn't leaking, but if it does, should I order the new style or old one? Thanks!

Small chance that if enough oil leaks on your exhaust and the perfect environment presents it self the oil could catch fire and burn you, your family, and dog to death. Not likely but possible.

Other than that it's annoying.

I did this to fix mine.

Other folks get the new cap which sometimes fixes the issue. Someone here ordered a new gasket and doubled them up with no issues. I made my own gasket as you will see in the DIY.

Good luck!

Weeping isn't a huge deal, truthfully. Oils with esters will do this due to their polar nature. As long as you aren't seeing a constant flow of oil down the valve cover, I would just periodically wipe it clean and keep driving. :-)

Thread revival..
Has anyone come up with a permanent fix (tighter cap) for this issue? Mine has been leaking for a couple months. Tried the new cap fix. Tried cleaning the o-ring. Tried flipping the o-ring.. It will occasionally be enough to drip oil on the ground, but it's getting very annoying.
I currently have a towel zip tied around the cap, but it only lasts so long before it's soaked in oil

Bumping this as I am having this same issue AFTER Rusnak BMW changed my oil cap and valve cover gaskets.

Car now has 100141 miles and leaks to where I have oil spots on my garage. Ordered the new style oil cap, super tight fit but still leaking.

I really don't want to take it back to the dealership as my car is now out of warranty, I'm sure they'll find some reason to take my money.

I have an E46 oil cap. It leaked a bit before I changed the valve cover. It has never leaked with the new valve cover. So I think the valve cover may also have something to do with it.

Thank you for the reply's. I just bought the Vargas turbo billet aluminum cap. Hopefully it fixes the problem. If it does not will try the new style cap.
