Wrong mileage reported by shop

I’m interested in purchasing a car but I found something off from the carfax when I bought one. Car is supposed to have 41,000 miles but carfax has it for 49,xxx miles. It was serviced at a bmw indy shop few months ago that reported the mileage as 49,xxx which was supposed to be 39,xxx. I confirmed this with the shop owner. Now i’m stuck with what to do. I don’t want it to affect the car’s resale value and/or issues with financing. Any insights is much appreciated, i just don’t want to regret not being well informed.

Thanks
Randy

Correct me if I am wrong but don’t all bmw have a solid dot that shows up next to mileage if it is not the same displayed as what the cpu thinks it has? No dot means no tampering with mileage so it should have no bearing on resale value regardless of Carfax mileage.

I believe so. No dots on the dash. Just trying to get more info, thanks for your input.

I believe you get the dot if either messed up while trying to roll back odo, or the mileage on the cluster doesn't match the mileage in other modules by more than 100 miles (or km?).

So technically lack of dot doesn't guaranty the mileage wasn't altered.

Erroneous mileage reporting happens all the time. If it's an issue with Carfax they will correct it if you provide supporting documents.

You will eventually catch up to the stated mileage so what does it matter. Just look at the more important items.
