Hey guys. Planning on picking up my m3 in the two weeks. Coming from e46 zhp. Excited to say the least. I usually wrench all my own cars, and have considered the rod bearing diy. Any recommendations on shops you trust in the BR/Nola/northshore areas that do good work? Just looking for price quotes. Thanks ??

Several options but mostly in N.O. area...

I bring my M3 to Greff Motors in Kenner. Good guys, quality work but you do pay for that. Not as much as the dealer but not your low cost option.

I have also used Uptown auto for my Z3 and my wife's 2002Tii. Paul and Frank are great guys and straight shooters.

Heard good things about Bimmerwerks in Harahan.

Never used them but hear good things about Autobahn South on Airline in BR.

Not sure, actually just had to drop her back off at Autobahn south in Baton Rouge to have a few things checked on. So will be back that way soon to pick her back up.

We have a active group of BMW drivers here in NOLA and we gathered for a crawfish boil out at NOLA Motorsports in the paddock area next to the track. A great turn out with great food, people and cars! They were racing motorcycles on the track so great fun to watch that as well...

I will have into look at these meets/events, I just recently purchased my 2011 M3 E93 and have been learning how to program it with the help of some video's and people on this forum. Just pulled rear wheel bearings this weekend pending install of new ones. Autozone had all of the tools required to loan for the project. Car was making a droning noise from the rear turning only right, doing rear brakes also. Needed the 7 ton puller not the 5 ton to get them out, the clip holding them in was difficult to remove had to destroy them... Now that the exhaust is off I will be opening it up and wrapping the 2 large perforated pipes. I had to replace brake booster vacuum pump inside of the front wheel well, it was putting the car into limp mode. Hope to meet some of the local guys at these events. Take care.

Welcome, hope to see you around! One thing to check in terms of the droning noise is the rear diff. It is a known issue to hear noise when turning at low speeds as you describe. Was fixed by flushing and using a different fluid... Search the forums for that.

Edit: here's a recent thread on the topic...

Thank you for the info, I got the bearings installed today. If this does not fix it I will change the differential fluid that will be a lot easier. It was making the noise only turning right so I figured bearing, I will find out soon enough.

A reasonable diagnosis! I had the diff grinding noise early on in my '11 M3, also while turning to the right. Dealer replaced the fluid under warranty and it solved the issue for me.

I had a tough time putting the axle's back in well one really, I messed one up with a hammer trying to knock it in the seal started to leak so I had to order a used one for $300.
I guess that's what I get for trying to rush. After doing the bearings, disks, brakes, exhaust wrap with titanium wrap, I was able to get the axle's in Sunday. I had to come up with a method to knock it in without damaging the end cap that connects to the Differential. I used a saw blade with 6 holes drilled into it, and put bolts secured with washers and nuts though the blade and the axel at the diff side. Had a friend hold pressure on the axle toward the splines, then I hit the saw blade to get the axel to go though the splines at the bearing side. It was difficult, I had to hit it really hard, but once I got it through about a .25 inch I used the axel nut to pull it in slowly. Finally torque it with a 1/2 wrench borrowed from auto parts store.

BMW has a hydraulic tool that cost several thousand to pull and push these axels.

This is the Hydraulic tool BMW uses to perform this service.

The last pic on this page is the end cap I damaged.

The exhaust sounds great! I found a local marine welder that welds using stainless, he will be sealing up the exhaust for me.
I hope no one has to do this anytime soon, but I now know what to do and what not to do...
The bearing video was great only difference is we have a wheel speed sensor (one Philips screw) to remove before pushing the bearing out.
Another video I watched shows the guy tapping in the axel, yeah right no way!!!
All tools were borrowed at no cost, you can even borrow the axel socket that I bought...

Update 5/8/18 - I drove the car today and still heard the droning/moaning sound. I just replaced the Diff fluid and it seems to have stopped now.
I wish I would have known before I started the bearing replacement.
I did ask in the forums but I got the answer sounds like rear bearing, but you had the right answer.
I should have asked around more or started with the easiest thing.
Well I have new bearings now...
