Dealer tire plug cost
Came home last Friday to discover a screw in my rear tire. I called the dealer to have it fixed and they quoted me $65 to plug the tire. Of course I said no thanks. Called a nearby reputable tire shop which will do it for $25. Same type of plug from the inside. Anyone think dealer charging $65 to plug a tire is a bit high?

I’m really just surprised they didn’t tell you it couldn’t be plugged and that you would need a new tire for $300+...

Go to discount tire, it's free to plug tires there. $65 is a complete ripoff, I'm impressed they actually offer that. Would've thought theyd recommend a tire replacement lol

You are going to plug a Z rated radial...

This. They patched and plugged my tire for free, knowing when I needed tires I would go back there. And I did.

But I can not imagine doing a 130-150km/h+ on the German Autobahn with a "repaired" tire, or even 250km/h+ where the Autobahn is unrestricted. For me, this is just a safety issue - and as devastating it may be, I would replace the tire(s) [one if they are like brand new-ish, both on the axle if they have some decent wear, just to rule out any possible issues with the DSC/ABS]. *edit* want to add: 65USD is a rip-off for a plug, 20-25USD sounds by far more reasonable. 65USD would be a rate for a tire-repair where the tire is taken off the rim and repaired by vulcanization or similar. |

I bought my car with wheel and tire insurance. I got picked up a nail at a track day and got it plugged there. When I got home I took it to the dealer and they got a new 71R to replace the one that was plugged. Said BMW did not approved of plugged or patched tires on the M at least.

But an exterior installed plug is, as others have said, good only for temporary use. Get from point A to the repair shop only (especially for a Z rated performance tire). Cheers,

I was talking about using exterior plugs only. Which imho can only be a short-term and temporary fix. Most tire-manufacturers are not allowing even to patch their UHP tires. The risk of the steel-braid being damaged is too high. |
