By all means, buy the car you can race at altitude, it's so key, especially when the vast majority of the country lives close to sea level.

I feel we need more threads about how the 335 is awesome because there's no forum for the 335 people to post on. It's a shame.

M Series BMW's are always pushing the envelope and on the edge of technology in terms of engineering. It's an over-all package that non can touch. A mod'ed 335 may perhaps approuch or exceed a single aspect of the M3 (Example:0-60mph) but it will never attain the level of refinment and co-op engineering.

If a modified 335 snakes a few red-lights on the M3, hats off to them . THey have a nice ride and a great engine, but knowingly not the chasis or level of engineering than we have in the M.

Just replay a few of the M3 V8 audio clips of that car on the track or revving...!! Take the time to really listen, it's INSANE..!!

Hate is closer to love than indifference.

I'm seeing lots of 335i hating going on here

Bring your M3's to the track when you get them, please

I would agree. But from a practical point of view, for $20K less, the 335i is the best all around buy. If you need a great daily driver, for the money it's the 335i. But who's to say we're very practical when it comes to cars!

That is correct, the standard rule of thumb is you lose about 1% hp for every 333 ft of altitude increase. Hence, 5280 ft / 333 ft = 15.8% hp loss.

You also lose about 1% hp for each 11F ambient temp increase, plus can lose several % for high humidity.

It's entirely conceivable on a hot day in Flagstaff, AZ, an e92 M3 could be down 25% in hp vs sea level or a turbocharged car at the same altitude.

Some of these also effect turbocharged cars, but the main problem (lower atmospheric density from high altitude or ambient temps) affects them less, since they boost to a constant psi over ambient pressure.

The ECU in non-FI cars cannot compensate for high altitude from a power standpoint. From an air-fuel ratio standpoint, it can decrease the injected fuel to match the lower air density, but that only balances the AFR, it doesn't prevent altitude-induced power loss.

Nobody hates the 335i. We are just tired of all the people who can't stop posting about it. It's like the seagulls from 'Finding Nemo' in here. 335? 335? 335! 335! endlessly.

I am one who has engaged in about every 335i vs M3 discussion here. If one did not read all my posts and/or read them casually one may think I am a 335i "hater". Exactly the opposite is true in my case. I LOVE THE CAR. It is an amazing all around car, wonderful chassis, wonderful engine, great performance, etc. I think it is a perfect car to be the core building block for the M3.

That being said +1x10^10 on the above...

people would think I hate the 335 too

I just don't like it when people think their car is the best ever and any other choice is stupid. you don't see people doing 325 vs other car threads or Z4 vs whatever threads

but 335 has been compared to vette, M3, 911, Box, Cayman, Ferarri, G37, Sti, Evo....... maybe I should list what it hasn't been compared to it might be shorter

the 335 is nice, but it is what it is.

I would compare the 335 to the m3, Vette, Box, Cayman, G37, STi, and Evo from your list. In each case, if offers similar qualities in some aspects, is stronger in some, but falls short in others. That's why it is called a COMPARISON.

Price

US MSRP for 335i is $41 (OK I rounded up to the NEAREST $1k). This entire thread premise, based right from the title, is that the new M3 is going to come in at $61k. Very doubtfuly IMO, <$60k is the opinion of the vast majority here on the board, see my poll.

As probably the most active member on M3post who also owns a 335 here are my two cents on the topic. The car is phenomenal, chipped or not.. it's a testament to BMW engineering. With that said though, I'm tired of the arrogance I smell wafting about the car nowadays. At the end of the day, there will always be a car out there that's better than yours. And the 335i, is most definitely no exception. Some humility would be appreciated.

Its quite obvious why the 335i gets a lot of attention and credit

1. Its much cheaper than the M3, and looks pretty much the same.
2. It has a turbo engine that easily can be chiptuned, and then quite close to the M3 in performance. (Less horsepower but more torque)
3. The engine even in standard trim has better torque below 3000 revs, so its more driveable. Tuned its even worse for the M3.
4. It has a more comfortable ride (less noise and more comfortable suspention) , but still proves itself at the Nurburgring being only 4 seconds slower than the old M3. Laptime 8.26, and tested on standard 17" wheels!!!???
Imagine some Michellin Cup tires 18 or 19" and a good chiptuning, the tires would do 7-10 seconds and the extra power about the same.
So that means a much more comfortable and more driveable car with an interesting "low"price driving as fast as the 507 hp M5 and close to the new
M3 on the worlds most challenging racetrack, and being a dream on the roads.
That would have been my choice if I didnt live in Norway, where my
325d costs more than a 335i costs in Germany or Sweden:mad:

The car that should be questioned is the new M3. It should have been lighter and stronger to make the gap to the 335i (and the competition) larger.

The New M3 will be able to do everything a Proceded, suspension tuned, BMW diffy swaped, aero packaged, wheel upgraded, and ego inflamed 335i can do but all in one package at a fair price straight from M engineers....

Answer is YES

yeah, it's worth it. I almost pulled the trigger on a 335 b/c I didn't want to wait for the M3, plus it's cheaper. The more I've read, though, the happier I am with my decision.
The 335i weighs less than the M3 in Euro trim, base model for base model.
