Is The M3 "The Poor Man's Super Car"?
In the overall scheme of things, probably a Yes.

I think that the term "poor's man supercar" .. is really easy to understand
if you want to buy a supercar, but you can't afford it ... you might be considered poor for that matter .. therefore "poor's man supercar" is really not that hard to think of and I would agree with GTR, Z06, R8 easily considered those however not the M3 .. M3 biggest problem for me to call it supercar is that there is just way to many of them ... if you own a supercar, you should met 3 or more every time you hit the road. Also the supercar should have somewhat more sleek body .. . I don't consider P911 supercar ... supercars are things like Lambo, Ferrari |

I think it's more appropriate to consider the M3 the frugal and practical man's Ferrari.

I have always lusted for an Aston Martin. A beautiful car but not a super car. Porsche is nice. But both cars are really two seaters. I don't think they are for me. Practicality!
I think what really matters is how you feel inside. Yes, you aim to have the best but at times you make the compromise to reflect your lifestyle, budget and family. If I am driving an ///3 today, is because I wanted an ///3. I am happy with it. Period. I don't care whether the man sitting next to me is in a Ferrari or Lamborghini. I am content and I am proud of my car. I paid for it with my hard earned money ... all the more reason to love and enjoy my car. Will I buy a Ferrari or Lamborghini? Maybe if I win lotto! Just kidding. I get enough jealous looks and at time comments. I don't want to attract the wrath of the people or make them believe I am super rich or plucking money from the trees. I think ///3 is designed and built to differentiate from a series 3. And I also like someone to define poor. If one can afford a ///3 one is not poor. They made a good judgement ... bought the car with the head not with the heart. Also I love BMWs. I could have bought a C63 AMG if I wanted. It has more power, right? I still feel top of the world every time I drive this car. Super car ... so you can brag you own one. No ... I bought this car to enjoy it because I want an ///3. It suits my lifestyle, my income and more importantly we can ride as a family ... my daughter, my wife and me. It's a "Super" car to me. Thank you.

Ferrarris and Lambos are pretty much useless and unpractical to most people who buy them. They buy them for a myriad of reasons but practicability is not a candidate to be at the top!
I would say that to be considered a super car, its price has to be north of at least $175K... regardless....

I would not consider the M3 a supercar because it falls a bit short on power and exclusivity. I also wouldn't call any 911 a supercar because while some have the performance, like the m3, the body style is all over the place.
Lambos, GT-Rs, Ferraris, Pagani, Koennigsegg are what I would call supercars. The M3 is a lot of bang for the buck. The GT-R is the only car I think delivers more bang for the buck. |

Many years ago, the first new car I bought was a 3 series coupe. Over a period of many years, I went to a 911, GT3,Turbo and an Aston Martin Vantage. All these cars were great, but for the most part were not practical for use on a daily basis.
This year my oldest stated driving, so I let him drive my 7 yo SUV. Now that the kids are getting older, I thought that I could finally get out of a SUV and into something sportier. I bought the M3, because it's practical sports car with good performance. There are very few sports cars which you can transport 4 people and luggage in. So for me is it a poor man's supercar? Nope, it's a practical sports car that you can drive everyday without any issues. My other car is a F430 and you definitely can't drive that car everyday. |

Leaving out the obvious items like depreciation and maintenance expense, why not?

I think a better term than poor man's supercar would be a "budget supercar". A budget supercar to me is a z06 or zr1, viper, and gtr. These cars can keep up with the fastest and most expensive supercars while being far more affordable, relatively speaking.
What about the M3? Puhlease, an M3 couldn't even keep up with a Mustang GT at laguna seca. Is the M3 anywhere near a supercar? Don't make me laugh. |
