The good new for sports and nature photographers now is that you may no longer need that heavy, expensive f/2.8 glass since you can always dial up the ISO and still get fantastic photos in low light.
I meet bird and wildlife photographers all the time that are simply using too low an ISO. On a sunny day, my default is ISO 800/f8 and 1/2000-sec. As for high-ISO performance, the Canons are as good as the Sony. I actually prefer the files of my Canon 5D MkIV, but we're talking 7-fps vs. 20-fps and the Sony's AF doesn't miss. It's a new paradigm.

With most sports, 1/1000-sec. is enough. I took the deer jumping at 1/750-sec.

FYI, here's an a9 sample at ISO 20,000:

Ready To Rumble by David Stephens, on Flickr

I could have shot at ISO 10000, but I wanted to see how the file would look. Remember, I use DxO's PRIME noise reduction, which is one of the very best, pixel-by-pixel NR programs that you can bu.
