Battery Replacement

1) How often should we replace the OEM battery?

2) How much is a new OEM battery?

3) What are alternatives to the OEM battery? And where can we buy them locally?

1.) Roughly 4 years
2.) Call your dealership. Prolly a lot.
3.) Yes. Just about any autoparts store will have alternatives.

Make sure you double check with other shops when the dealerships tell you to replace them. I have seen many cases that they just want your money.

+1, OEM batteries are about ~$200 range depending on dealership.

We've been using the Braille B2015 on our 135 and B2317 on our S/C M3 Project with no ill effects if looking to shave some unneeded weight.

I replaced the battery in my old e46 (after 5 years) with a Duralast from Autozone. It was about $80, had more cold cranking power, and was a perfect fit.

I would venture to guess that the e90 wouldn't be too much different.

If you're going to replace the battery, get a lightweight battery or an Optima sealed battery.
If you tend to run your battery down a lot, like listening to the stereo with the engine off, then get a yellow top since it'll handle discharges/recharges better than a standard battery.

I wish my AAA had mine. They told me they don't carry mine and I'd have to get it towed to a dealership to have it done. They're in kahoots with the stealerships! haha

Speaking of battery replacement, today I took my 2008 E92 into my local BMW dealership, as I had a check control indicating an "increased battery discharge".

I was just informed by my SA that they ran diagnostics on the car, and it turns out that the battery only has 30% of its life left.

Now for the fun part: he tells me that the decrease in life is due to what he referred to as "unfavorable driving conditions". He gave the examples of leaving the key in the ignition too long, leaving the driver's side door open, etc.

I'm on the record when I say that I don't do these things. I suspect that I'm being snowed by the dealership.

Thoughts? Any guidance from fellow M3 owners would be appreciated!

Do you have to have the car programmed when you change the battery?

AutoZone Duralast Platinum Perfect fit!

This battery is a perfect match.

AutoZone Duralast Platinum
$189
Model: H8-AGM

*Bolts in securely with original mount. Easy replacement.
*Accepts the vent tube on positive side.
*900 Ah, over 900 CCA (depending on temp)
*3-year warranty

And everybody says to get the car reprogrammed. Personally if you can't get it programmed for less than $75 its not worth it. Batteries are expected to last 4 years and they are only $190. So if you get 2-3 years out of it that is fine. Not to mention, you can get a prorated amount toward a new one if it dies early. So a new battery ever 2.5 years might end up being about $100 and you don't have to go through the hassle of having your car services. My dealer wants $200-$300 just for the programming $350 for a battery. That's just nuts. $700 total for a battery. No thanks, I wasn't born yesterday. : )

I coded my new battery (H8-AGM) in my E70 X5 with the Carly app ($50 for app, extra $10 for battery registration add-on capability). No need at all to take the car to a dealer for this.

The battery was $160~ from Advance Auto.

Like the E9x platform, the E70 chassis are highly dependent of healthy batteries, and a lot of little electrical issue can crop up when they are on their last legs. If you're having any 'increased battery discharge messages', it'd be a good idea to look into testing & replacing your battery if necessary.

I've experienced this first-hand, and everything seems to operate and run much better with a new battery in the X5. Luckily I have a newer battery in the M3, but I won't hesitate to replace when needed.

Anybody recommend a good battery testing tool? My OEM batt is coming up on 5 yrs old but everything runs fine and I use a battery maintainer.

If you're buying non-OEM, be sure to look at the CCA specs AND the ah specs. Many batteries don't advertise ah, and are much lower than OEM.

I think my oem (non-M) had 92ah (AGM battery, 900 CCA).
Some others I found had as low as 40, not enough when you consider how long the car keeps some electronics active after exiting the vehicle.
