Think about the curve of the M throttle map.

When you hit the M button when your at 50% physical throttle the throttle plates move via the plastic gears instantly to 80% or whatever the actual number is it shocks the gear teeth and eventually strips them.

I doubt that just mashing the pedal down to the floor could be as harsh as the controller but I don't do that to my car either.

Be advised these numbers are made up but I know the second number is higher because the curve is way above half when you're in M mode.

At the end of the day BMW should of had metal gears.
I had a feeling your logic dealt with the % jump.

Could be right, could be wrong. Thanks for the response.

All I know is that they wear down and the job is way easier than shops make it out to be.

It shouldn't make a difference whether you hit the M button under load or simply get on and off the gas quickly. The effect would be the same (opening and closing the ITBs due to the change in throttle response)

If you think that the small spike in throttle response from the M button would cause the gears to move to the point of damage, I just don't see how it would differ than stepping on the gas quickly. Track driving has the TAs moving the ITBs all day long and at a much more pronounced degree than the M button would.

My thoughts on the matter is from wear and tear due to the material BMW used given the application of the part.

Happy to hear your take. thanks

BTW... Last weekend I drove an '18 Raptor like you have...awesome truck
It's a hit or miss, the guy who you are responding to is pure assumptions and no facts.

For example, I have 200k kms on my car and I have never replaced it. And trust me, I drive my car hard (a lot of movement of the TA gears) yet not issues...

I'm not saying they won't go bad, it's probably a matter of time but it's not an issue in my opinion.

I don't see how a motor mount will cause bearing wear in #1, but regardless you should be problem free for many miles now.
I guess the rationale was that the engine was not properly balanced due to this broken motor mount and that it could have led to additional vibrations in the engine causing premature wear of the rod bearings.
In any case, I had started to hear a faint "rubbing/ticking" sound when cruising between 2,000-3,000 RPM and I am certainly glad I had it checked out before the engine blew up.

No it doesn't work like that, the engine mounts are just there to isolate the engine vibrations from the car/cabin, that is why going with race or solid mounts cause increase NVH.

This might be the highest mileage one so far. Great color combo but I can't jump on that mileage

the car looks super clean

except there might have been a dead body stored in the trunk and some blood seeped through the tarp or something

Hi Everyone

New to the forums , just purchased a 2008 bmw convertible supercharged ESS stage 1 , 6 speed with approx 185 000km (not miles) .

The supercharger was installed at about 145 000km. The car had its actuators replaced, but the connecting rod bearings have never been changed !!

Ive listened carefully to the engine and i dont hear anything unusual , i will be sending a oil lab test soon.

Just wondering if anyone has heard of supercharged M3 2008 that has never had its rod bearings changed with such high mileage . Do you guys think i should change it ?

Thank you

First off, congrats on having a well-running M3 with that many miles, that's quite the accomplishment. Rod bearings is something that most can not have to worry about when the car is stock. However, with a supercharger, the added stress on the engine is something that even I wouldn't risk. I would definitely recommend having them changed, just for peace of mind so you can spend more time thinking about all that horsepower.

Welcome aboard Denokarter! Yes, with that mileage and SC on top I would defenitely replace the shells soon as possible, probably engine mounts and general overhal at the same time. Small cost vs what you just spent and a good investment in a car you wished for.
Secondly, looking forward to a couple of pics!

So you’re saying that his original bearings are NOT worn out? Perfect condition without any indication of wear?

Did I said said they are "NOT" worn out or in perfect condition? No I didn't. I just said don't touch it leave it alone. Bearing failure are less than %1 just rev it and enjoy the car..

Canadian Trip

Purchased a 2008 e93, 6 speed manual in December with 87k on her. Just completed a 1300 mile venture into Canada. From Philly into the 1000 Islands region and west to Kingston Ontario. From Kingston, west along the Lake to Toronto and then East to Ridgeway Ontario on Lake Erie (across from Buffalo). From there back to Philly. Car drove like a dream, no issues and had a smile on my face the whole time. 80% of he trip with the top down. Best purchase I have made in a long, long time. Here is a picture at Sackets Harbor, NY on Lake Ontario. Enjoying a high mileage M!!!
