Out of Control GT500 Kills Pedestrian

Man Loses Control of his 2007 Mustang GT500 Convertible
LOCAL NEWS

NEWPORT BEACH, May 03, 2007 (CNS) - A high-performance convertible went out of control on Pacific Coast Highway in Newport Beach, fatally injuring a pedestrian, police said Thursday.

The accident occurred around 7 p.m. Wednesday, when a 37-year-old Irvine man lost control of his 2007 Mustang GT500 convertible east of the entrance to Chrystal Cove State Park, said Detective Bill Beverly of the Newport Beach Police Department Traffic Division.

The pedestrian, who had been walking on a bike path parallel to PCH, was taken to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, where she succumbed to her injuries, he said.

The driver was also transported to Hoag and released a short time later with minor injuries, Beverly said.

The victim's name was not immediately released, he said, adding that drugs and alcohol do not appear to have been a factor in the accident.

Any witness to the accident was urged to call Beverly at (949) 644-3747.

Care to explain why? Its still a ~3500 lb hunk of metal hitting a human, probably pretty quickly, but I'd like more details with regard to the accident too.

Actually, doesn't the Convertible weigh more?

Like someone above said, for all you know he may have hit an oil slick left by a leaking tanker. Don't presume without facts.

True - not enough facts - just that he lost control...someone may have darted in front of him and he swerved, taking out the poor gal walking on a nearby path...potentially misleading article but typical in this day and age...

As everyone said, its a mistake to judge without knowing the facts.

With that said, has anyone driven a convertable mustang before? That is one loose out of control car... I can't imagine driving one with 500hp

Doesn't matter what the "facts" are.
The driver is responsible to be in control.

Some circumstances are outside your control. If you're on the highway and a big chunk falls off the car in front of you there is no time to stop, so you have to swerve, even if you're in total control of the car you can't stop from 80 in 50 feet.

That being said I think it's most likely massive smoky burnout style driver error, but you can't know that.

yeah... it could just very well be external conditions. but im going to make the assumtion as ive driven a mustang svt or something like that.... those american cars have NO handling whatsoever. shit just kinda slides whenever you press the gass (my friends mustang was hitting like something around 400+hp) so i give the driver props for being able to tame such a beast.

on the second hand, if his car was as smart as a E9* with such an advance traction controll/stability controll system, and superior handling.... maybe he would have made it? u ever hit a curb in a E9*? i have (going downhill @ something like 15 degrees or more?). the car just re-aligns itself. ive seen my freind hit a curb and SPIN THE FUCK OUT in the mustang. no big curb, small, and the shit went nuts....

who knows. we dont have enough details to kno anythiing

Yeah, the car does handle very well and recover as well, especially with all the systems activated. Sometimes for the hell of it I'll go into a turn (with tons of extra room and no other cars around obviously) quickly and just turn the wheel as fast as possible, smooth steering transitions be damned. Front tires give a little chirp then you just turn. (I think thats DSC helping, but I'm not really looking at the dash when I do it.)

Agreed, never assume. Good chance there was an oil slick, or something else made him swerve.

But I bet he was driving irresponsibly. Play the odds.

No passing judgement, though, until the truth is known.
