Performance Mods / State Inspections / Reference Thread

There seems to be a ton of confusion going on around here about state inspections and performance modifications. Every state is different so I thought maybe we can get a compilation of information posted in one place so people considering adding performance mods to their car will have an idea of the risks associated with passing state inspections.

Most of us already know that anytime you disable any of the emissions systems - including deletion of secondary cats - it is supposed to be an automatic fail. But I've never heard of anyone in real life fail due to eliminating secondary cats. So let's get a list going of the state you live in and the performance mods you have, and if you are able to pass inspection.

So I'll go first:

State: New York

Performance mods:
Fabspeed X-pipe with 200 cpi High Flow Cats, Akrapovic Slip-on. Macht Schnell air filter.

Inspection Results:
Pass (after initial fail due to emissions CEL )

I don't have many performance modifications. However I wanted a full exhaust system to improve the sound of the car, followed by the additional performance gains. If you guys have been reading the forum lately you will see these HFC's that are supposed to never throw a CEL just happened to throw one for me as I was on my way to get my NYS inspection. Needless to say I failed the emissions portion of inspection. On my way in to be inspected I cleared the code so there was no more CEL, but didn't know that will cause the emissions monitors to fail a readiness test. I had to drive the car for awhile ( I did about 100 miles) and let it sit overnight for a cold start. Once I did that I took it back in for just the emissions portion of inspection and passed no problem.

Hopefully it helps out people who are not familiar with the inspection rules and mods.

Also, previously I had an inspection done with just an Eisenmann Sport and a secondary cat delete. With primary in place there was no risk of a CEL and it passed no problem.

^--- you guys gotta start posting up your mods and inspection results, even if they are duplicates of ones already posted. As we all know passing inspection also depends on who is doing the inspection and what they will let slide, so just because one person passes with certain mods doesn't mean everyone will.

I have pulleys, AA xpipe with hfc, AA exhaust, and MS filter.

California results anyone?

If fail, anyone know a place to get signed off at in so cal?

So, at this point in time, is there no ecu tune that will pass emissions? No ones mentioned ess, aa or oe.

They will pass if you don't turn off rear O2. But you will need your primary cats in place. Otherwise you'll have a CEL and that is supposed to be a fail

Are you going to re-flash just for the inspection then put the stage 2 back on again?

No, I sold the Dinan midpipe, no need for stage 2, so after I pass I will flash to Dinan stage 1. I already spent the money so I might as well use it, even though it is basically stock.

Awesome thread for those of us trying to find out what mods that can be done without any legal issues. Right now that looks like (to me) a cat-back exhaust, intake, a mild tune, and maybe a pully kit...

I've heard from others that a primary cat delete will NOT allow you to pass emissions test in California.

ANY cat modification to ANY cats will not allow you to pass emissions test in CA.
