Battery registration failed?

I installed a new genuine BMW battery. I tried registering it with my Autel Maxicheck MX808 tablet. It took half a dozen tries for the battery code to be accepted by the tablet but eventually it went through. Then I got a message:

"The battery exchange could not be performed.
Possible fault cause(s):
No communication with Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS) or engine electronics.
Program status of the engine electronics cannot save any battery exchange
Terminal 15 off
Engine running"

I have no idea what terminal 15 is, but the engine was definitely not running. And the 808 was able to grab the VIN from the DME, so it was communicating.

ideas/advice? TIA

Terminal 15 is in reference to KL15. This is in reference into the IGN signal as to "ON."

Then there is KL30, and KL31 for battery positive and battery negative respectively.

For your post here, it's in reference to "cycle to key" as an example. For our cars, this would correlate to one push on the start button without pressing the brake/clutch pedal. You would typically hear the fuel pump prime and KOMBI fully light up. If you press the start button again without brake/clutch, it should then go into ACC mode. Then pressing the start button again should turn everything off.

Hopefully i explained that right. It's important because some modules need terminal 15 [KL15] for them to turn on and to report on the car's network.

Simply put turn the car fully on but not engine running when attempting to code the battery. Maybe buckle the drivers seatbelt as well to prevent the car from sleeping prior to coding ending.

Much thanks to both of you. Perhaps it would be better if I was sitting in the seat, door closed, belt on? Or would having the belt latched while I sat outside with the door open be enough for this to work?

You don’t need to sit in there belted in but the thought of you going that hard in the paint does make me giggle a lil. The belt recommendation is more necessary for module updating as it can take a little longer. Battery registration isn’t really more than 3 minutes if that.

I don't take any chances when I am coding. I am sitting in the car, belt on, helmet on, driving shoes, driving gloves, and battery tender.

You guys lost me there. Can you translate that into GenX for those of us not so new to the world?

Man, I feel old...

I’m 47 dude, I’m gen X.

-Tear Off’s are the clear sticker layers on windshields or goggles. You tear one away if covered in mud, tire rubber, bugs or whatever to have clear view.

-Going hard in the paint is a basketball term for someone playing hard in the painted area of the court (the key).

Come on man you gotta get up to speed. Just kidding. Did you get that battery registered?

Well I learn something every day, I guess. I've never played basketball or watched it, so there's that. But the sticker thing? Where would something like that ever be found? I just wash my windshield with a white Scotch pad and some Zep foam and it's good. What goggles? Skydiving?

No, unfortunately I never got around to that. I had to use the car so I buttoned it up and drove on the new battery. It's behaving, so I'll probably forget to register it. Way too much to do in other areas right now. I've been planning on getting the car to the dealer before the FRM warranty extension runs out, so I'll have them take care of it if I don't have time.

I decided to do a search for "goggle tear offs" and found this:

https://www.mx-gear.com/what-are-goggle-tear-offs/

and then "windshield tear offs" got me this:

https://protintshop.com/products/bmw...layer-tear-off

Very interesting!
