M3 Normal Engine noise? NEW M3 owner.

Hi guys,

Owned my car for 5 months now. I just want to check in and get some other, more experienced members opinions on the sound from my engine. I am unsure if it sounds healthy/unhealthy. I can't hear any knocking.

I am aware of a slight air leak from the oil filler cap, new NRW rocker cover are on the way to remedy the leaks, oil and air.

Typical S65 noise with its ticking and clicking... FWIW over YT, give it some slow rev between 2-3k.

I have done the slow rise in revs when warm to check for knock etc. So far so good. Just more concerned about the ticks and clicks haha. From what I understand from another post I put up, using LM 10W60 seems to cause more ticking and other noises. Is this correct?

I also have this sound. When driving against a wall, accelerating from low revs and can only hear it with the windows down.

I've seen that some percent of LM oil users report louder clicking from engine. Goes away if they use a different oil.

All of the typical s65 sounds were present. No worries. If you’re using LM then specific sounds/ticks will be louder than with other top oils. I’ve switched to Red Line and no new sounds and all old sounds remained the same.

Yep sounds normal to me. When I first got my e92 I was terrified of the sounds at idle. Fact is our cars sound like tractors in certain conditions and they’re great 👍

No reason to cheap out, use Castrol or Shell 10W60 as the others for some reason apparently generate more noise. You'd still have some S65 ticking and clicking though...

I am leaning towards giving Castrol a go. I used to have a MK2 focus RS and the only oil you could use in it was Castrol as it was the only one to meet the Ford specs until LM came out with Molygen 0W40. It's funny though, here in Australia the LM GT1 is more expensive at retail. That and my workshop uses it as we are an LM partner. I can put up with the ticking and clicking, just wanted to make sure its ok for it to tick and click. My oil change intervals are at 5k kms and its a daily driver.

I'm sure it's good stuff, imho just easier to stick to what the engine designers recommend.

Steal headers are noisey. One thing that can quiet our motors pretty good are OEM motor mounts in good condition but that’s pretty much just cabin noise helped out. The S65 sowing machine is what it is
