@OP, you just need to learn to judge where your car is - doesn't take long to learn. As someone suggested, an expensive lip will teach you fast.

im sorry and no offense...i think your driving instructor did a horrible job teaching you, did he not teach you to compare your side mirrors to the other cars beside you? and also, why dont you just back in?

The way I do it (and this will depend on your seating position) is I line up the mirror so it's six inches "past the curb" from my point of view. Meaning, there are six inches of curb I see past my drivers side mirror. Works like a charm.

what if you are comparing side mirrors with a Mini cooper OR SMART CAR? then what? M3 hood is almost twice that length of those cars...then i would end up driving OVER the parking block just to have my mirrors parallel to theirs...not all cars have the same length front end

For backing into parking spots, someone explained to me that some places (like my HOA) don't allow it because the heat from the exhaust can cause shrubbery to catch on fire, or something weird like that. Other than that, you'd figure it's way safer to pull out of a parking spot head first.

I'd say try and learn you car dimensions. Do as I did, I put a can of nails (sealed lid ofcourse ) in my drive way and I tried to get a s close as possible witout touching it. Do that, and you'll learn your dimensions in no time!
Took me some time at first but now I can park ~ 1-2 inches away from it.

I've heard that some females have issues with "time" & "space". This is first known issue of a male that may be affected.

I say NEVER look at the other cars, everyone around here parks when their wheels hit the curb. This creates the illusion that you can pull up further than you can. I generally know the dimension and park conservatively (so I won't hit the curve). If I get out and the back is sticking too far out, i'll move in a bit. This is a much better scenario than killing my lip on the curb.

If you cant back in, not in all cases, but you can use the reflection of the car next to you. You should be able to see the front of your car and how close you are. You'll eventually learn the dimensions of your car

Can't believe you haven't learn the limits of your car by now. I wouldn't attempt to leave my bumper 1" from the bump every time, but I can consistently park it within 6", and have never hit my bumper. Plus it's not a Coupe DeVille, so there's a ton of space on the back. You could even leave it a foot off without an issue. All you need to do is practice man. Get out of the car when you're close, and find a way to judge the distance you have left. Look at another bump next to yours and see where it's in relationship to your car. That's another way. That's an easy reference for women too. I found a way for my wife to park the car inside the garage perfecty every time in a similar manner: as soon as the right mirror clears the door's frame, stop. Better than hanging balls, bumps, etc., as that method works for front clearance too. Hope this helps man. |

In general, just practice at home or work where there's nothing to hit to learn where the front of your car is relative to the parts you can see. At home I have tape on the garage floor marking where I want my left rear tire to be so I can open the door and spot exactly where I want to be while still in the car. Right now my M5 is parked inch-perfect very close to a ton of junk at the front of my garage. It's a thing of beauty, really.
