We just got back ourselves, taking delivery on Thursday March 28. We also took the factory tour but didn't get to see the storage facility that you were able to show us. That looks pretty amazing... thanks for the pics.
Having now done the ED, I agree with OP on several fronts. First, you will never be able to appreciate what goes into building these cars until you see it done live. It is truly amazing. Second, and after having driven on the German and Italian roadways now, the attraction of the little cars is magnetic. They're zipping around all over the place over there, and they are really cool once you begin to appreciate them (which is undeniable). I would have never considered one, but now I kinda want one too! The real issues facing those cars here are that (a) US drivers are terrible, (b) they drive too many giant SUV's, and (c) the roads are deplorable. I've seen what it looks like when a 1-series meets soccer mom's Suburban and it's not pretty. If the US ever wanted to get its act in gear, it would've taken advantage of the economic crisis and infused stimulus to bring our transit system up to the Euro standars --- i.e. develop an efficient electric railway system; improve road design to Autobahn levels; incorporate strict driving penalty system if you cannot drive responsibly and follow the rules. It would work here just as well as it works there. If grandma can't learn to stay in the right lane when cruising down the highway, then she loses her license and has to take the bus. Similarly, if teenage boy racer wants to act like an idiot driving recklessly, then one strike and your out for 5-yrs. You'd be surprised how effective it is. I never saw one episode of either instance during our 10-days of traveling on the autobahns. But, I digress. |

I agree. BMW is like MB not selling the A45 AMG here.
