M3 or X5 Xdrive50i

Hey guys,

Need some advice from those that have had or still have a 2015 model X5 Xdrive50i. I came across a good deal on a 2015 X5 Xdrive50i with 57k miles that has all the bells and whistles ($80k new) except M package for $33k. One owner and clean Carfax also.

Would you sell or trade in your sweet garage kept 2011 M3 e92 ZCP 6 spd manual with 34k miles (Nav, M exhaust, black Y-spoke wheels, carbon, sunroof, etc) for a twin turbo V8 X5 if you got a great deal on your M3 and also picked up the X5 at a great deal? I'm at a delima here not knowing if I would rather keep the M3, which is just a weekend/nice day car for an X5 that would become a daily driver and I don't know what, if any, issues there are with the X5's. Are the X5's worth parting ways with the M3 for? Are they reliable?

Thanks for the help.

Repairs on the turbo 50i models are numerous and expensive.. do a quick search and you'll see what I mean. Also look at what you need most in a single vehicle and your answer will come to you.

Most people on here are severely biased to the m3 and rightfully so.

My advice would be to keep the M and get a much cheaper suv, that's what I did and I couldn't be happier!

the n63(v8 turbo engine) has a lot of issues, stick with the m3.

The X5 will be a lot easier to drive and pretty quick with a tune. The M3 is more fun to drive. But if for whatever reason you don’t really drive the M3 much then you are missing out and should buy another car you enjoy and drive more. I drive my M3 so I don’t have this dilemma, and would not be tempted by any BMW SUV short of an X5M and even then I am not sure though I would not mind having one as a second car.

This is why I stopped in here to ask first. I know you guys know your stuff on BMW; much more so than myself. The M3 is staying. I don't want to get into something that will have huge repair bills.

The N63 issues being mentioned here are most definitely true, but more so on the E70 generation (2007-2013). The F15 50i has the N63TU (technical update) and they've been considerably more reliable than the original N63.

I have both (I have an E70 50i) - very different driving vehicles obviously, but each fun in different ways.

I was at a similar dilemma. I had my E92 M3 as a daily, and Z3M as my weekend car (the perfect combo for me at the time, as I could work from home). I got a new job that would require a 20 mile daily commute on some rougher roads. I was looking to consolidate the 2 M's to one car that could serve both purposes. My choices were the X5M, Cayenne, and Range Rover. After much deliberation, I couldn't bring myself to sell both M's. I decided to keep my E92, and traded the Z3M. I got a great lease deal on a VW Tiguan. The Tiguan is actually a fantastic all around daily. Its comfortable, spacious, sporty, gets great mileage, and is pretty fun for what it is.

After a few months though, I rarely drove the Tiguan. I just couldn't let the M3 sit there in the garage. I passed the Tiguan along to my girl and kept the M as my daily.

Throughout all of this, the one constant remained my E92. I can say with certainty, you will miss it, regardless of what comes next.

I have an M3 and and a X5 35i and there is no comparison. The X5 is for the family and while it's a great SUV, it's no M and I always prefer the M over the X5. You'll have to weigh what you need most but look at a cheaper SUV where you can have both. Just my two cents...

Just an old gas saver accord. My wife has an MDX and I really like those also. The M3 never see's the rain or bad weather for that matter and is always put up for the winter. I really can't see myself using it as a daily, that's why I was considering selling it. I can always just keep it and get another SUV or something to daily that would be more reliable and inexpensive to repair.

What is the point of having the car locked away? At the end of the day, you only love once. Take that thing out and drive it! I couldn't bear driving an accord every day knowing I had an M3 parked away. If you can see yourself driving the car all the time, maybe it wasn't meant for you. Maybe sell the M3 and get something you'll actually use.

I am a drive it or sell it kind of person also. I can see a difference for a car collector who can’t drive all the cars much, but the idea of driving a beater most of the time and parking the fun car never made any sense to me. If I had a 991TT, my dream car, it would be my driver, with snows in the winter.

The thread title kills me. Get a 4runner and keep the M3.

I have both, e92 M3 & 2014 F15 X5 50i Xdrive.
The X5 is for long freeway drives/road trips with the family, mostly driven by my wife.
I use my M3 as a daily driver, including in winter/snow with winter tires.
Occasionally when I drive the X5, I immediately miss the M3.
These are not comparable vehicles!
I would agree with others here, recommending that you get a cheaper SUV on the side for bad weather use and drive the M3 more.
I personally also feel that M3s that are not driven regularly need more frequent repairs.

If you really want an suv, the only choice is an X5 M. Fast, fun, and can haul a lot of junk. 0-60 in 3.8 too...
But if you have to trade in the M3 for it, dont. Just buy a 4Runner and drive it until the wheels fall off, which on those cars is north of 250k mies.

I almost bought an x5 50i. Fun to drive. Spoke to my bmw tech friend about it and said they always have one at the shop.. lots of issues and very expensive to fix. I ended up picking up a diesel x5. Keep the m3.
