Skip the reservoir. Just get an overflow reservoir. I haven't seen the BW (or any other reservoir) actually solve the overflow issue. BMW Motorsports themselves used the factory reservoir with an overflow reservoir
Mine has been dry for 3 trackdays already

My overflow solved my issues with the stock reservoir. I was considering getting the BW reservoir but tried the overflow first, 0 issues since. Totally dry now after 4 days with it

I posted a few pictures of my setup on Page 2 of my build thread for anyone interested.

Chase Bays sells a baffled reservoir. They claim fluid spills out because of the velocity of the fluid as it returns from the rack to the reservoir. At high RPMs the fluid returns at higher pressures. The OE reservoir does not adequately slow down the fluid so it spills out the top.

Makes sense but not sure if that's true.

Don't you have an overflow reservoir? Even if it's dry there is still a line leading to it which allows for some expansion. The true test would be to unhook the line from the cap.

Without the overflow, it indeed leaked a bit.
Hence doing the overflow.
But the overflow has been dry so far.

have not done a day over 80f. Jury still out

Also, are you guys fully flushing your PS systems regularly? I think that may be how I killed my pump. I never flushed. I would do the siphon and refill regularly, but after doing a few of those and then shortly after flushing the system using the reservoir return hose bypass method and watching the fluid flow, I realized they did exactly jack squat.

I'm doing the partial rinse and repeat method. Should probably remove the pipe and do it right

On my power steering discussion, happy to share my experience. I'm a bit rough on my car as I'm not a superhuman driver and trying to go fast.

Stock PS cooler + stock reservoir = fluid sprayed through hood vents onto windshield, pump whined a lot and had some temporary failures of power steering. Replaced pump

CSF PS cooler + stock reservoir + underdrive pulleys = no improvement

do88 PS cooler + Bimmerworld reservoir + stock pulleys (removed underdrive) = no spray, pump whines half the time on track, but seems to perform just fine

Nah. Hydraulic fluid is pretty stout and I wouldn't expect it to get very dirty or diluted. Periodically siphoning or whatever will slowly rotate new fluid through.

If you're curious if it is breaking down or contaminated, siphon some out with a turkey baster and send it to Blackstone.

My power steering fluid ends up looking like chocolate milk after a year or so. I have been through two engine replacements in last two years so flushed it both times then.

And you're sure you're not filling it with chocolate milk? Easy mistake to make.

It didn't taste like chocolate milk...at least the first two glasses didn't. I could drink any more after the first two.

It was likely vegan almond chocolate milk. Blackstone analysis confirmed it's not quite as good as the regular stuff.

Fluid darkening doesn't mean it's "bad". Motor oil turns black pretty quickly after it is put into service. If it's getting milky, that sounds like contamination with coolant.

PS fluid (hydraulic fluid) is very stout and able to withstand a lot. I would be curious to see the contamination and viscosity after a year. Have you considered sending it in?

BTW here's the spec sheet for CHF11S. Just look at that viscosity index...313!

I am in an E46 which uses ATF. I am not overly concerned as it's easy enough to flush that I'd do that before sending it in. I get your point though.

ATF is a hydraulic fluid. :-)

Actually surprised it doesn't spec CHF11S, the viscosity is nearly the same as ATF.

Every oil change, I just use a vacuum bleeder to suck out the reservoir and refill.

I'm pretty sure my PS pump is partially damaged. Probably some excessive wear in the pump impellers. It happened during auto-x. The fluid foamed up and the pump was whining.

Ever since...my steering now feels slightly heavier and it's pretty much perfect.

StripclubDJ Were you there at Buttonwillow on 5/30 5/31? I was there... met one of the GTRs with Trinity decals. I chatted briefly with him, he said you weren't there!
