Winter mode 2018/19 - GTS sized PA4

Thought I'd share my somewhat unique winter setup. I drive in a crap ton of cold rain in temps 35-50F as well as frozen surfaces and rare snow. I also just moved to a neighborhood up a huge hill. My M is my daily but I can steal the wife's SQ5 if there is significant snow.

This is my third car/setup using Michelin PA4 and I think it's such a dope winter tire. In the past I've done 18s with 245s square on an E90M, stock sizes on M235xi, and this time on my M3 I wanted to go wide aggressive with close to stock offsets. I don't subscribe to narrower is better in winter. I'm not rally driving in Finland.

Wheels:
Decided not to spend an arm and a leg on winter wheels so went with the classic CSL look in gunmetal.
VMR V703 (VB3) 19x9.5 et33 and 19x10 et25

Tires:
Michelin Pilot Alpin 4 (PA4) in E92 M3 GTS sizing 255/35/19 and 285/30/19

Enjoy!

Nice looking setup! And wow, 285 in the rear during winter... bold choice ;-)

My setup is 19" 220M wheels with 235 and 255 F/R in Dunlop Winter Sport 3D's. We also get 10-35 degree temps with occasional rain and snow, and the Dunlops do great in this, and have really nice cold dry weather handling. If the snow is more than an inch or two, I leave the M3 at home or work from home.

Any issue with the traction control? I read that the gts size of 245/35 and 285/30 has different programming for the 40mm difference compared to the stock 20mm difference. Anyone know if a 255/35 front and 295/30 would fit on the stock competition car with zcp wheels?

OP: did you go with a 255 front because the wheel is 9.5 (too wide for a 245)?

I thought the GTS size was 255/35 front but I guess I don't know. I think it makes more sense than 245/35 and yeah at least for my wheels 255 is better. I haven't noticed any traction control issues with using MDM. Seems the same as my summer 255/275 setup.

255/35 front and 285/30 rear will fit ZCP wheels and suspension. That's basically what I'm running.

It's really the diameter that makes the difference not the width as far as messing with the traction control/ABS. Look at the tires that come on the X5 when they are around 40mm width difference but their rolling diameter is around 0.1% different, basically no difference.
These sizes are only -0.4% difference between their diameters.
The 255/35 and 275/35 is a +2.3% difference in diameters so his choices are closer to being equal on the front and rear axles.

Thank you. I realize that width and profile plus rim determine overall diameter.
Stock 245/265 has a 1/2” diameter difference being taller in the rear. 255/30 and 285/30 has a .3” difference shorter in the rear. One would think that is a large enough difference to mess with traction/ABS.

Most non M cars have an equal diameter front to rear. Surely the mdm dsc on m cars are different that the dtc dsc on non M cars.

Factory recommended snow tire setup is square (same diameter front and rear)

270M + 235/40-18

https://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1179007

The car is designed around a square setup from the factory, and especially the DSC and ABS, which are much more active participants in the driver not crashing in ice and snow than on dry roads

Great point, about factory winter setup (f/r square-same diameter). Diameter may not be as important than just slipping.

The PA4 is a great winter tire. I've been running them since they came out on all the cars where they are available

Tires are staggered from the factory. Are you referring to the winter OEM setup? There is no winter DSC mode. 235 square is really narrow for a car with this much power unless you drive in fresh pow all the time.

That’s exactly my point. You aren’t going to confuse the car running a square setup. It’s designed to run a square diameter setup (235/40-18) and a staggered diameter (245 and 265 with taller rear tire) from the factory. There is no button or setting to change to let the car know you’re running the oem snow tires. You just bolt them on and go and the car handles it just fine.

So this hand wringing we see on here about sticking to stock staggered tire diameters is wasted worrying

Same for the GTS sizing...actually uses a slightly taller front than rear, car don’t care

GTS uses a 5mm spacer in the front. I'm thinking it has something to do with the 30mm stagger front to rear (255/285) compared to stock 245/265.

As far as tire sidewall height being shorter in the rear with 285/30, I'm not sure the car knows a difference as someone said previously. It's a very small percentage change from 265/35.

My speedometer certainly doesn't know the difference. It's off by ~6% now. 😆

You’re comparing 285/30 to 265/35? If so, that’s not 6% difference. More like 2%.
