Battery Registration with Carly
The local BMW indy shop wants $125 to code and register my battery but at that price id rather buy my own equipment for future use so Ive been doing some looking at old forums regarding battery registration and coding with the Carly app and dongle but I am left with a few questions.
1) I am putting in a mini/z4 size battery H5 AGM while the oem is a H8 AGM. I need to adjust the amp hrs and some other details when I register the battery from my understanding, can this be done via Carly or only basic battery registration details such as "New battery on X date"? 2) Some forum members seemed to be having some issues with Carly battery registration where it would say successful but when going back in to check at a later date the registration would not be present and would instead show the previous registration as the most current. The last mention I found of this issue was about 2018 time frame based on the date of the post. Has this issue been remedied or has anyone been having issues recently with registering their battery via the Carly app and dongle? Thanks! |

I've had no issue registering a battery in my E90 and E91 with Carly. It provides a choice of battery size also.

I can confirm this issue is still present. Went through this debacle earlier this year. If you do the battery registration in carly, there will be nothing logged in ISTA-D that battery registration was performed.
Therefore, there is no evidence that battery registration done through carly does anything at all. The procedure is either malformed, or simply does nothing at all. I ended up redoing the registration with ISTA-D, and now it is correctly logged. |

Bad news...Carly app indicates registered along with data shown.
Reality, batts are not registered. Proven twice with two different vehicles.

While I'm no expert, I did Carly battery registration then went to check it in ISTA the last registration mileage was not listed. I did it again using ISTA and it shows how many times the battery has been registered and the mileage.
Perhaps it still does something but it doesn't do it how ISTA does it. |

I replaced the 90AH AGM battery in my M3 with a 80AH AGM a few months ago. I used Carly to code the new battery capacity and register the install, however when I checked the results in INPA I found that the Carly app had done nothing! The app is a waste of time when it comes to battery replacement. I had to use NCSExpert to code the new battery capacity to the VO and then register the new battery with INPA.

I found a bit of interesting info about battery registration over the weekend.
About 4-5 years ago I replaced the battery in my '12 E93 M3. Registered it with Carly and had assumed it was all good. Yesterday I replaced the battery again. Nowadays I'm more familiar with BMW tools such as INPA, ISTA/D, ISTA/P, etc. So before replacing the battery, I checked INPA which showed the right battery capacity, but it had no record of the battery ever being replaced (it logs the mileage of the last 4 battery changes - all 4 spots read "0.00" km). So I replaced the battery, registered it with Carly (latest version as of 8/16/21), but sure enough, INPA didn't have the record of it. I then checked via ISTA+, same thing - no record of the battery being replaced. I then tried both INPA and Tool32 to register the battery. Both reported "Okay" as it successfully registered the battery, but then I checked both INPA and ISTA+, and neither had any record of the battery being replaced. Again, all 4 spots read "0.00" km. I turned the car off, waited a while, etc thinking maybe it takes a while to record the change, but nothing. Finally, I used ISTA+ to register the battery, and this time it DID record the battery change at the proper/current mileage. I can see it in both INPA and ISTA+ now. So ISTA+ seems to register the battery AND update the last changed value. Carly and Tool32 "appear" to register the battery (and perhaps they both do, or don't?) but they do not seem to update the mileage of when it was last changed. Note that I used both the Bimmergeeks Pro cable as well as an ICOM B during this testing with no difference between the two. Last edited by brettcp; 09-04-2021 at 09:44 AM.. |

Try Bimmercode or Bimmerlink. Then have it checked at an Indy BMW shop.
Looks like Carly is running a scam for the Battery Registration feature, along with their yearly subscription fee. Cheers |
