Gritty Paste Wax?

I decided to wax my car yesterday with my father's Meguairs Ultimate Paste Wax and the results were ehhhh "so so". I was kinda in a rush to head back home from the holiday weekend and I didn't check the wax too well before I began. I noticed that the wax was fairly gritty after I began but after it was applied it felt fine I guess. After I was finished I noticed the paint felt gritty and I am not sure it it was from the wax or if the car just needs some work done to it. From a distance the car looks fine to me. However, I don't wax my car often so could anyone give their impressions with this wax? Here are a few pics but nothing close enough for a good representation of the results:
