Eisenmann Iconel exhaust
Eisenmann has been showing prototypes of a rear section made of Iconel (austenitic nickel-chromium-based superalloy). This is a very high-tech material used in turbine blades and such, and very difficult to fabricate with. Apparently they have overcome the challenges. Anyone have more info (hint, hint, IND?)

whats the benefit to using this material? i was under the impression that jet
engines used this because of the high amount of heat that the blades have to endure. i cant imagine that a muffler would benefit from this. |

Ya, my company makes intake and exhaust parts for jet engines out of this material. Very expensive. Used in extremely high heat, applications. It is also heavy, not sure the exactly how it compares to Stainless steel, but they are very very similar, inco possibly tipping the scales slightly on SS. As for forming and fabrication, Inconel is difficult to work with, but not too bad, thats my bread and butter . It would be a great choice for turbo components or headers, but even then, Stainless steel is sufficient for a street car. I am very curious what would cause a company to dive into using such an alloy, aside of course form the "bling" factor, which would be a minimun due to the fact that 90% of the public has no idea what inconel is.
That being said, I can definately appreciate the product and look forward to seeing some numbers. |

I'm wondering what the benefit is by using inconel in a car exhaust. It is very resistant to heat. I believe the first (or maybe just one of the first) applications was in the exit nozzle of the X-15 rocket plane. Also, isn't this even more expensive than titanium?

What would be the purpose of using Inconel for an exhaust? It is heavier than steel. I work in the oilfield and we use inconel on tools that are required to resist H2S. H2S will do horrible stuff to steel, but Inconel is very resistant.
I wonder what the concentration of H2S (if any) might be in exhaust gas? |

I really don't see the point of an inconel exhaust on a street car vs. SS or titanium, other than for bragging rights on car forums and at meets. You exhaust doesn't generate enough heat to compromise SS or Ti, so why inconel? It's not lighter.

Ummm...based on this image, I'm gonna go with the inconel is SUBSTANTIALLY lighter than their SS version. Either that, or this guy is really jacked.
*Edit* The guys in F1 have been using Inconel for a few years at least. Maybe you just use a thinner gauge than the regular stainless.http://cgi.ebay.com.my/F1-EXHAUST-RE...item27ac90f97a Last edited by Ajax-Prime; 12-19-2009 at 10:18 PM.. |

Inconel is heavier than stainless steel. I dont think you would have to be "jacked" to hold up a muffler. It might weigh 20lbs at most for the small section section the guy is holding in the picture. I'm pretty sure my 110lb girlfriend could hold that up... Here is the comparison of SS vs Inco: Inconel - Density 0.306 lbs/cu in - 0.299 lbs/cu in Stainless Steel (302) - Density 0.285 lbs/cu in In order to make a lighter exhaust with inco, you would hve to use a thinner gauge tubing, but this could also be done with SS, no difference... If you look at the Ebay ad posted above, those are headers made out of inconel which makes sense due to the extreme heat that an F1 car produces right out of the exhaust ports. Not necessary or even beneficial in the slightest way on a street car, or even most race cars. So yes, Inco is not something new to the auto industry but it has a very specific place, eg. turbo charger impellers, and components, headers for certain engines such as formula cars. Good luck to whoever sells these... |
