That CL63 instrument layout is

All MBs have that small tacho off too the side and a huge mph gausge right in the middle...reminds me of a Lexus/Honda.

For high performance driving that's all I want to see. Anything more is just too much information, and not that useful to me.
I don't exactly know what is being displayed on the LCD in the center but I would like that stuff to be moved down (as a previous poster was suggesting). I actually like the M3 dials; but I would rather have them closer, and am not sure about the dials within the dials. Porsche's answer is to move the smaller dials out, and be stand alone dials. I like the 599's directness. Whatever else is displayed on the dial surface is related to the information the dial is communicating: Rpms-Gear; Speed-Distance.

Porshe's instrument panel is too busy IMO. All the others look great.

Your average M3 consumer would most likely find it impractical (now that they plan to sell 100000 of them) as the resolution on the speedometer can be problematic. I'd love to look at it every morning myself and see the large tach dial go up when stepping on it, but you get ticketed for going 5mph over around where I work, so I do find myself looking down to check my speed when I see a cop car. That's still not reason enough for me not to like it, but others would most likely have problems with it.

Guys, what is up with all the new "M" models going to white backlights instead of amber/yellow?

It seems very plain and dull.

Maybe I should start a post on instrument backlight colors and see what people think?............. lol

for those griping about the small speedo on the P car,

there is a digital speed readout in the lower portion of the tach

^ looks like a freakin space ship cockpit. Weird place to put the engine start/stop button. But surprisingly and oddly, i like the layout.

Looks like something a crane operator could use. The shifter looks like some kind of joystick.

Never seen a crane instrument cluster before but I think the civic looks cool. It does have a more boy racer/toy feel to it but it's intended audience is younger.

+1

Please amber backlights for me, IRL much better than white.
Why do you think they use amber background light in submarines? Because your eyes dont`t have to adjust to different light conditions, and dials can be read well..................................

Speaking of white and red backlights, the Corvette Z06 has them both!

I love the look of the white backlight:

But is it really that bad to read at night?

Best regards, south

It will be OK I think, but amber backlight is a typical BMW feature, so I would rather see it back, the white is a little fancy IMO.................

Porsche's layout may look too busy, but in reality it works the best on a manual car, especially on the track. You really have to drive one to understand. Just one glimpse and you get all the information you need from the central gauge.

The Aston's cluster may look fancy, but it doesn't work at all. The beautiful metal is very distracting, the tach needle oddly turns counterclockwise, and the most ridiculous of all: the entire legal speed range is covered in less than one fifth of the speedo.

You could just tell that the Aston's instrument was designed by someone who relies on public transit and bicycles, whereas the guy at Porsche probably spent most of his time staring at a Stack race cluster on the Nurburgring.

I was referring to the layout of these panels. Yes, the metal might prove to be too much. I would also want to tach to go clockwise. The resolution of the speedometer seems to be an issue with just about all of these cars to varying degrees. That's why it might make sense to display speed digitally only.

The most disturbing on the M3 speedo IMO is the use off different scales;

1st; steps in 20 km/h up to 120km/h

2nd; steps in 30 km/h from 120-330 km/h

Where is the symetry here? I do like symetry, and none is present

300km/h bottom means 150 km/h in 12 o clock position and so on............so WTF is this all about.........................

I find this extremely offensive and makes no sense at all. I'm sure I would have noticed it myself soon enough - but in the mean time, thanks a lot for making sure that there is something I cannot stand about my new car right from the start

It's okay. Don't mind the dash; you can repeatedly rev the engine in neutral in stopped traffic and push the EDC button to remind yourself what a great car you have!
