E93 CSL carbon bootlid

Hi all,

Am looking at getting one of these because I think the stock boot lid ruins the look of the car, mostly when the roof is up, it needs some more oomph but after market spoilers don't do the job.

I'm thinking about a CSL style bootlid in carbon although I will be painting it space grey.

This is not an option I've ever seen anyone purchase in the UK, although lots of companies seem to offer it.

As far as I can tell they all just resell the same cheap chinese product.

Anyway, I just wanted opinions from people regarding fit and finish, am a bit worried about messing around with a perfectly functioning folding roof mechanism.

Looks like we’ve done similar searches… I’m in the same boat, would love a CSL style boot lid for the E93 that isn’t trash. Supposedly Vorsteiner made some 10+ years ago but I’ve never seen one for sale. Similar Duke Dynamics… would love to know what you turn up if anything.

I’ve had some Chinese stuff recently for diffusers and side skirt extensions that has been excellent.

They tend to mould off the good stuff and sell for cheap. There are many carbon companies in the UK that pass these things off as their own when the reality is that it’s much easier to buy from china and relabel or package so part of me is tempted for the $500 to take a risk.

Only difference I can see anywhere is the recess size for the centre brake light. The vorsteiner which will never be found these days seems to mount the brake light flush, but most of the others seem to recess it within a large cutout - I’m not sure why - might be the Chinese way of making it look like the moulds are different and they didn’t copy.

There are frp versions too for much less money but I’m concerned that they warp over time and so I think I’d prefer carbon even if I’m painting it.

Am just concerned that once I remove the bootlid, even the stock one is never going back on the same if this experiment fails.

But I still really want to try it!

I’ve just read an old post somewhere saying the Vorsteiner fitted really poorly.

This is the one I’m looking at which seems to have the nicer brake light recess shape.

I’ll dig up a post somewhere that the Duke Dynamics one had fitment issues as well. What can ya do!

Duke dynamics one looks the right shape from what I can tell but I have also read about fitment issues.

As far as I can tell there are two designs, one with a recessed brake light where the top edge is flatter with a squarer bend towards the tail lights and the other with a flush brake like that seems with an upper edge that seems to continuously curve across the entire width of the boot lid.

I prefer the latter. If someone can show me how to post pics I can make my point.

This company sells the product but if you scroll through the pics, they show both designs against the one product.

I’ve emailed them but not had a reply yet.

Looks like it’s the duke dynamic design that I’m after.

It seems from their links that they don’t exist anymore.

Did anyone else take over the batten and continue making them after DD disappeared? Or does anyone know if a second hand one out there?

I really don’t want to have to resort to getting the other design one which is just not as good looking (although probably still better than stock).

Do you have any idea how much these weight in either the "carbon fiber" or "forged carbon fiber" versions?

I suspect the "carbon fiber" version, since it sounds like it's really a layered construction of mostly fiber glass with a top layer of carbon fiber, that it's not a true carbon fiber product unlike the ones from RKP, which are no longer in production but which also cost 2.5x as much.

Duke dynamics one available in frp, frp with carbon outer skin or full carbon fibre.

Any of the carbon fibre options are wet laid, not autoclaved proper stuff. The full carbon one is something like $4500.

To be fair, I think all of them are far too expensive for me to consider actually doing, especially given the fitment issues reported.

I’d prefer to have a custom body shop extend a stock steel bootlid with a CSL style duck tail if I’m spending £2500. At least I could guarantee the fit.

The fit on aftermarket boot lids for e93 are TERRIBLE!!! Stick with stock.
