Temporary paint protection film?

Hello all,

I just made a decision on my replacement car, which I will be driving from NY to FL this coming week. I usually go overboard with my cars and paint protection film; that said, I will be driving about 1000 miles coming back home, during which the car will not have a clear bra on. Does anyone know if any of the temporary recommendations actually work, and do not damage the car's finish? I've read about tracwrap, roadwrap (sp?), a product made by Griots, and obviously blue painters tape. In the past, I used painters tape on a car that I purchased 2 hours away - 30 minutes into the drive, the tape started to come off and bang against the car, so I ended up removing it all before continuing. I'm not sure if there is a specific pattern/way to apply the tape?

Also, since I do not have much time to wait for a product to be shipped to me, I wonder if there is something that I could purchase at the local automotive auto parts?

Thanks in advance for all input!

Yes I thin it's a 3m product. I have no experience with it but it's sold at auto parts stores and sprayed on. Do a search as someone on this board used it before.

3M Paint Defender

http://3mauto.com/products/paint-defender

FYI, you need a good layer of wax before you spray on the film and you need to do plenty of layers or else it's a pain in the ass to remove. Ask me how I know

Thank you fellas, I'm afraid this may not work for me, as I won't have the necessary time to apply multiple layers and let it cure...I may need something film-like, since I'll be picking up the car and getting on the road hopefully 30-60 minutes later.

I've read about the Griots film, and it appears that someone had issues with it. Anyone familiar?

I have this stuff called self adhering collision wrap. Comes in 2 foot wide roll. Won't be pretty when you put it on, will be wrinkled but it would work and just peel right off. Body shops should have it.

Can you elaborate on this? Is it expensive? Safe on clear and have you ever used it for purposes of a trip?

I could…however, trying to minimize the chances of nicks/chips, which would then defeat the purpose of a clear bra on a perfectly maintained car.

I can't elaborate much. I got it free from a body shop and used it once on my e90 at the track. It was too much of a pain in the butt to use every time but for a single use like you need it should work fine. It's a wide sheet so application isn't perfect at all but who cares just peels off in one piece after done.

Excellent, that's all I care about…self-adhering collision wrap…I'll see if I can get my hands on some tomorrow.

Thank you.

It's like a big roll of sticky saran wrap.

just try to keep a good distance between cars ahead of you during the long stretches of I95. I'm sure you know this already, but never get behind a truck. Driving on the highway isn't that bad right now since there are salt/sand on the ground yet. I picked up my vehicle in FL and drove to NH

absolutely…thank you. Weather forecast seems ok Tuesday/Wednesday, which is when I project that I will be picking up.

Cleartastic. I used it on my Z06 for years with great results. Buy the bulk roll and trim to your needs.

I admire your dedication. I've lost that battle long ago, now I just enjoy the ride.

Agreed. Although, after my smartass reply to OP, I hit a 6"x12' (probably 1/8" thin) piece of plastic going 80mph on the interstate yesterday, about 2 hours after my post. Serves me right (no damage though, luckily)

Where do I get this and what is it?

To everyone else: I hear ya, not trying to stress but it's a long trip and most of it highway.
