Castrol TWS 10W60

Looks like it's now discontinued. Was able to order through Autozone, Oreilly, etc up until last month. Can still order it online through ECS & Turner but they are selling at $25/qt.

I've got an '08 M3 / S65 Engine.

Curious what everyone is running now as an alternative to Castrol Edge Supercar 10W60.

I also live in Colorado, so running in colder temps.

Asked Bing AI the same question and received an interesting response!

"According to BimmerWorld1, Genuine BMW 10W60 M “TwinPower Turbo” synthetic engine oil is formulated exclusively for BMW M engines from 2001-2013 (including 3/2000+ M5). This is the newest BMW 10W60 oil, now produced by Shell, and replaces the previous Castrol TWS and Edge 10W60 engine oil.

However, according to PistonHeads2, Castrol Edge 10w60 is still the correct oil for BMW M3s, as now is Shell Helix Ultra Racing 10w60.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions."

So is Genuine BMW 10W60 M “TwinPower Turbo" the product same as Shell Helix Ultra Racing 10w60?

It might have been, but as of like 1.5 years ago, BMW oil is back to being produced by Castrol (BP). You may still find old bottles with shell, but ones fro the end of 2021, irrc, are Castrol again.

Retail Castrol EDGE supercar 10w60 is still around, but now called Castrol Edge Eurocar. Castrol did a whole naming change on their oil brands.

I don't know about if the prior BMW 10w60 is the same as Shell Helix Ultra Racing 10w60... but your information from Bing is out of date.

BMW went back to Castrol for their "Twin Power Turbo" 10w60. Confusingly they will be in the same bottles and have the same labels as the Shell oil.

Thanks Z K. My local BMW parts department just confirmed that the Twin Power Turbo 10W60 that they are selling is made by Castrol, and has been for more than a year.

Thanks for the information regarding the Castrol Edge Eurocar rebrand. It looks like most of the local parts suppliers don't have the eurocar in their system yet and are trying to sell Liquimolly. They are just stating that the Supercar formula is now discontinued.

I was able to get some Castrol 10w60 from our local Audi dealer yesterday for $8.99 a bottle to get us by.

I was going to purchase either some Supercar from ECS, but as I said, they want $25 a bottle. Furthermore, the BMW Twin Turbo they are advertising on their site still says "Shell formula," so I am assuming they are selling old stock.

Speaking to our BMW dealership yesterday morning, they couldn't tell me who currently manufactured their oil. I called back later in the day and someone confirmed it is BP. Still $21 per. Was nice being able to get Castrol Supercar for $12.99 while we could.

My local BMW parts department quoted me $17.43 CAN $ ($12.89 USD) for the Twin Power Turbo 10W60 and confirmed that it was Castrol oil, not Shell.

Is the 10W-60 Audi bottled oil identical to the 10W-60 BMW bottled oil?

No, but your premise isn't quite right. I'll explain. There is no audi oil. There was TWS, then "supercar" that audi sold (like for R8). They even had a part # for it (G-052-194-1L-DSP), but it never was an audi (orvw) product, always in castrol gold bottle. From my recent experience, they're out of TWS or "supercar" and are now selling the new "eurocar" from castrol. You'd verify by part #. I've seen it as cheap as $9.

However, some, through ignorance or deception, will sell you a black bottle of 10w60 made by VW that is not Castrol, it might not even be fully sythetic, can't remember. It's cheaper, and has an entirely different part #. Can't remember the true manufacturer of it, maybe mobil 1.

This is what the audi oil looks like

Important: The new Audi High Performance Genuine Engine Oil meets or exceeds the specifications of the oil that was previously supplied under the Castrol brand name.

It's VW. That's what I meant. Made by Mobil 1 which means lower quality base stock I would assume (grp III) so less shear stable & film strength I think. Not as low a pour point, but same viscosity once warm. Probably fine oil, but I don't know what additives are in it, and have no exp with it. I don't consider Mobil 1 to be as good as castrol professional or motul or amsoil or redline etc.

For these engines, seems like people like to run a 5w50, which Mobil 1 makes I think, so maybe that'd be a better choice depending on your beliefs about oil affecting RB health.

It most definitely is/was...I checked the Data Sheet on both the Genuine BMW Twin Power Turbo 10w60 and the Shell Helix Ultra Racing 10w60 and everything matched up such as Pour Point, Flash Point, Kinematic Viscosity etc.

It even states in the BMW Datasheet that the supplier is SOPUS Products which stands for Shell Oil Products US.

Here are the links to the documents:

Shell Helix Ultra Racing 10w60:
https://shell-livedocs.com/data/publ...934966f48c.pdf

Genuine BMW Twin Power Turbo 10w60
https://autodatabases.com/oilcat/med...rbo_10w_60.pdf

So all in all it was definitely Shell but now yeah so I have heard its Castrol now. So either or would work in my opinion!

It does appear like Castrol Edge Eurocar 10w60 might be a rebrand of Castrol Edge Supercar 10w60. I track my car fairly often and have always had good luck with Supercar. Probably switching to Eurocar next.

Edge Eurocar available from O-Reilly ship to home right now and MOM20 discount code gets you $33 off (and free shipping)!

2 links for some reason, but I suspect it's the same product. The second link seems to confirm that this was a rebrand of TWS (but wasn't supercar already a rebrand of TWS).
