The M3 is really photogenic (pics inside)
This is a bittersweet post for me, but I thought I would share nonetheless.
After an unplanned move from Houston to Los Angeles last month, I've decided that this city is not the right place to enjoy my M3. I'm constantly terrified someone is going to sideswipe or rear-end me. No offense to any SoCal folks, but almost every driver here scares me. Combine that with the traffic / my six speed and it's just not fun anymore to drive my car. I wish I had the funds to keep this as a weekend play toy to escape into some of the mountain roads, but that's not in the cards for me at this time. So, I will likely be posting my E90 for sale soon and replacing it with something that isn't special or meaningful, knowing that it's probably going to get beat up living in this city for the next five years. With that mission in mind, I drove up to Mulholland Drive last night to shoot some photos of the car after a polish & wax. Of course, I fell in love with her all over again. The proportions of these cars are just spot on and there really isn't a bad angle. I thought I'd share some of the more abstract / artsy shots here since they really don't belong in the classified ad. Anyways, enjoy the pics! |

Don't sell it dude! You will acclimate to the traffic. I daily my M and as a result have 166,236 and nobody has hit me. Things move fast in a big city Tex, you'll get used to it. At least trade it for a DCT but don't leave the best platform made.

What he said! Don't be a baby, I daily drove my e92 m3 and now f80- both 6mt. Traffic sucks ass, but you're going to miss having the car every single day if you get rid of it. I missed my e92 even with an f80, so I went and got one to make a dedicated track car

I get your point that cars are not fun to drive in too much traffic, also the e92 M3 needs to be revved hard to be fun. That being said, you could still drive and enjoy your car on several of the canyon roads just outside of LA on the weekends without much traffic. I made a similar mistake of selling my e90 M3 a few years ago for a Range Rover Sport due change in driving condition, missed the M3 and so traded in the Range Rover for an e92 M3.
There are many people on this forum who have moved on from an e9x generation M3 but have come back in a couple years. At least give it 6 months, then decide. All the best! |

I say keep her, meet up with some enthusiasts down there and talk cars/commute a little. Great group of peeps down there and I'm sure you'll regret selling her.

Welcome to LA. You want to know something funny? I moved here from CT in 2011, and within about a month I decided the same thing, my 2011 M3 was not the right car for this City. I ended up in a 335i for a while, then rode motorcycles and didnt have a car for almost 4 years.
But NOW I am back in a 2011 E92 M3 and I fucking love it! Also, you will get much more used to driving here with so many cars around you at all times as time goes on. It is SO different when you first arrive, I thought EVERY car was going to hit me, just like you said!

Pretty car.
I did not like driving my M3 in LA when I lived there for 3 years, either. But, an 08 E90 with 18s is the right way to do it. GL with whatever you decide to do. |

Thanks for all the feedback and encouragement guys.
I think part of my issue is the place we ended up renting. We're on a 2-lane "mountain" road and my fiancés car has already been smacked while parked out front in the month we've been here. We have driveway parking but it's not possible for me to get in without some serious scraping of the front bumper / under trays. I'm also having to adjust to the cost of living. My insurance premium literally doubled when I moved and I have yet to find 91 octane for under $4 in a close radius. Running costs are definitely a lot higher. I'm still sleeping on it... I love this car but it was a much more convincing argument when I lived in a Houston suburb. |
