That's the word on the street. This sale was mentioned in a few different threads and is a $100-off sale from discount tire direct on eBay. They happen to sell these in sets of two so the end result is $200 off! Supposedly this sale has already been offered twice this fall, just waiting to seize the moment the next time it pops up.

i get them from my guy for just over $1k mounted and balanced. i have yet to find a better price, but ~$800 shipped would be the first.

They have these sales about 4 times a year and have done this for at least 2 years now.

Off topic, but how many days are these tires lasting you around the track? I am on RS3's now and am looking for what my first R compound will be.

I have about 150 track miles and about 700 road miles on mine and I might be able to get another day out of them. One day it was really hot in a warm month (95ish) and I think it wore them out a little more.
I'm also relatively new to the track, so as I get better, I won't be taxing the tires as much.

Same here, only about 3 track says under my belt but getting better each time I am out there. I only have 2 days on my rs3's so it'll be a while before I need new tires.

I've read that going to R compounds too early can actually slow you down some as they mask your errors much more than extreme summers.

Correct. Learn technique and ingrain the good habits on a slower car and more "moderate" tires.

i've read the same- and it makes sense. i bought my track wheels/tires second hand after my first track day when i used my street tires.
i like the nt01's and they may mask mistakes, but i feel like i know it when i'm making mistakes. mdm also lets me know it as well.

MDM is a good indicator, and I used it in that way as well. I was astonished when I went DSC off how much (in less obvious ways) MDM had been intervening without flashing on the dash.

absolutely. a lot of times when i make a mistake in driver input, i know it before the car is in the position i put it in and mdm helps me out. i like to think i have a good feel for a smooth, natural, and efficient movement, but i still make mistakes in timing it just right and/or rushing/dragging.

on a recent trip to the streets of willow, i turned off mdm and loved it. i was putting more power down out of the tight corners and the car seemed to rotate easier. it only took me two laps to put it into the dirt. i'm not ready to turn it off every time. i guess what i'm trying to say is that although i agree that sticky tires can mask mistakes, mdm will still let you know most of the time.

I disagree. Gripper tires allow you to go faster. Period. I can't remember a time when a person was time keeping that they said they were slower on stickier tires.

What R-comps do is mask the mistakes that will ultimately lead you to exceed the limit of grip and lose control of the car at a higher rate of speed. This is why, my opinion, you see more offs that result in a crash in advanced groups. With an R-comp...you're likely going +10mph faster off track vs those with street tires. So you go off quicker, further and more likely to hit something. R-comps tend to snap vs progressively squeal and lose grip so it is much more difficult to regain control...so I think there is a lower save % as well.

I also disagree with using MDM as a gauge of your driving. There are a couple of common stages for most drivers. One of them is learning to control the rear axle. Unlike the front wheels...the only way to really know what is going on with the rear axle is through the seat. MDM numbs that sensation since it intervenes when it senses slip angle. Good drivers know how to maintain some slip angle in the tires. Even worse...a stock E9X M3 is likely one of the faster cars in any group. So you slaughter the field because of the car (with MDM) and move into advanced. Then you realize that you need to turn DSC off but now you are going much faster with a lot more risk and a certain expectation that comes with most advanced groups.

I would never tell a student to turn off DSC due to liability for the DE org. If things like lawyers and lack of personal accountability didn't exist...I'd tell the student to turn that sh*t off.

I lived this mistake of driving with DSC on in my 330Ci...luckily nothing bad happened but you really are missing out on 50% of the capabilities of this car by driving with MDM on.

In the end...turn DSC off from the start and drive slow.

I went from grippy street tires to R back to grippy street, as the R was creating all sorts of situations where I was pushing the car beyond my skill.

The tires even saved my ass a couple of times, which was hilarious and of course an obvious eye opener. It mirrored exactly what people had been saying about them masking mistakes and not letting me learn the limits.
