Jerez E92 Dual Duty build

I suppose it's long past time to start a build thread after nearly a year of ownership, if for no reason other than to document for myself all the shit i've done and forgotten about. Anyway, here's my E92 M3, I picked it up for pretty cheap last July during the pandemic with the intention of using it as my daily and slowly bullet-proofing it for the track as I go.

The car had 115k and as you can see it was a bit rough around the edges. Some fool screwed the license plate straight into the deck lid rather than plunking down thirty bucks for an OEM bracket. That said, the bones were good and the price was right. I intended to replace most of the parts anyway. The used dealer I bought it from had already sold the car but the rod bearings failed in the first thirty days, Massachusetts has pretty solid lemon laws so they bought it back from the original purchaser and put an engine from a car with half the mileage in her.

First things first, not knowing the history she needed a thorough servicing. Liqui moly, some new oil cooler O rings and Turner titanium magnetic drain plugs-ya know, for weight savings…
Seemed like a good time to get rid of the tattered old under panels in favor of something a bit more robust.

I took about a pound of dirt and clay out of the front cowl drains, glad I got to them before water started overflowing into places it doesn’t belong.

Interested in seeing you bring her back to her former glory. I agree that the bones are good, just needs a ton of spit and polish (literally) to get it looking great.

The Turner skid plate is a very well designed piece, it’s already proven itself useful over a few Boston area sleeping policemen.

The hydraulic fluid was looking pretty nasty (and probably mostly water at this point) so I gave the brake and clutch hydraulic circuits a good flush. Front pinion seal was seeping a bit too, I’ll tackle that at a later date when I drop the rear subframe. For now I’ll just flush out the fluid for some fresh Castrol and replace the drain plugs with Turner titanium… again, for lightness…

Shortly there after I had a few warning messages in the cluster. One for a tail lamp bulb. That was an easy enough fix

The other one for a misfire on cylinder six, that took just a bit more digging. Must make a mental note to order some new hood struts so it will stop clocking me in the forehead.

I had no clue what sort of mileage the current spark plugs had done so I figured I’d replace them and check the coils while I was in there.

Once I had a few things out of the way and was able to pull the ignition coils, the culprit became self evident. It turns out (unsurprisingly) that the hacks that had been in here previously were not the most gentle with things. They had mangled the housings on coils four and six and tore the boot on number six. The arcing against the cylinder head is what was causing it to miss.

Since the aftermarket Bosch coils were back-ordered I had to get a pair of fresh coils from the dealer. Luckily I pay cost, but they still ran me almost $600 for the two.

The A/C wasn’t exactly freezing me out so I figured I’d recharge it with some fresh R134a and a healthy dose of leak detectant dye to assist in future leak diagnoses.

Forgive the upside down photos, I’m writing this up on my phone in an airport lounge…

The engine air box was a little on the filthy side so I treated it to a deep clean and a fresh BMC Racing filter.

I noticed the breather tube on the intake elbow was just barely hanging on for dear life so I ordered a new elbow from the dealer. The shiny new air filter does little good if unfiltered air is sneaking in through the elbow.

Being that I was used to the direct feel from my e30 clutch, the e92 pedal had bothered me a bit. UCP to the rescue.

I think I’ve got the clutch pedal adjusted about where I like it.

It’s slowly getting there, feeling more and more like an M3 should.
