It's a marketing scam if you get it with a 6 speed manual transmission. The availability of DCT makes it so much more a different animal than other 335i cars. But yes, much like the ZHP package of the E46 generation, the mid cycle ZHP/IS is clearly a normal effort to float sales levels of an aging chassis.

No offence but my new race exhaust it just puts the 335i to shame, IMO!

OBVIOUSLY an IS sounds a lot like a 335i with an exhaust. Because it IS a 335 with an oem performance exhaust. You compared an IS to a car with the same engine and concluded that it is not unique sounding. That's like me saying that an E92 M3 doesn't sound unique because it sounds like every other E93 and E90 M3. There is not much more to say about that.

And yea, I don't care for the rough sound of the C63. Maybe it's because some idiot here in beverly hills has a white one with an obnoxious AMG windshield banner sticker and awful exhaust that you can hear from 3 miles away. But in any case, I prefer a smoother sounding V8. The air buffeting sound coming out the exhaust (much like the sound you get when you open one rear window while on the freeway doing 100) doesn't sound good to me.

Don't get so upset man. M3s sound awesome and it's clearly a great car. I'm not sitting here being delusional and trying to convince anyone that my IS is a better car.

i have very detailed data on this.

road and track magazine measures db noise at idle and various speeds.

Interior noise (could be affected by sound deadening)
335i
idle in neutral:45 dba

constant at 70: 66

M3 idle in neutral:53 dba
Max in 1st gear: 79

and just to put M3 vs 335 performance debate to rest:

why do people keep comparing an M3 with a 335iS? i have a 335iS and i love it, but its not an M3. its different. different rides for different people. factory modded 335i is what i was looking for and which the iS was perfect for.
exhaust sounds realll nicccE!!! no1 can argue that, but the M3 exhaust sounds nice as well! different kind.

You missed my point completely. I was referring to the fact that the S65 doesnt sound like your typical v8, it has a much higher, exotic pitch on the top end when compared to cars like the vette, mustang, etc.
I know the exhaust on the 335is is the BMW Perf exhaust...
I get what you're saying shift@red. You still are not comprehending anything I am saying as it pertains to your original post. And the whole delusional part was not a quip at you. It was me saying that I am not one of those unrealistic 335is owners who thinks his car is better than an M3. That's fantastic if you think your car sounds exotic at high rpms.

335is IS a nice car. I think it sounds awesome, may be the best sounding 6 cylinder out there.

for V8 sound, i will take C63!

Because the rest of us read the original and subsequent posts and recognize that an IS is significantly louder because of the exhaust it is fitted with from the factory. Plus, who closes threads? The purpose of a msg board is discussion. This isn't ask.com

They all sound better.

Why is it the guy with the 335is is trolling on the m3 board anyway?

The only hater I see here is you, wishing you had an m3 instead of your 335.

hmmm no. If I wished for an M3, I would have bought one. I'm not one of those scraping my funds together so I can afford a BMW guy. I could have bought a barely driven M3 and had money to mod it with what I paid for my 335is. Hell, I could have bought a new M3 and modded it so there goes your failure of an assumption. I cruise around on all the bimmerfest forums. Didn't know you had to own an M3 to post here. you are such an angry man. you should relax...it is friday after all.

my sis has a 335is and it is louder than my stock m3 before (now i have an exhaust and there's no comparison now)
but what i've always felt is stock for stock, you hear the exhaust note more on the 335 vs engine on the m3.. needless to say i take the m3 every time =)

You may be right; you may have gotten your 335is just because you like it when you could have gotten an M3 instead. The problem is, for us (M3 owners/drivers) we love our M3s so much that we CAN NOT imagine, comprehend or believe that someone went to the BMW dealer with 75K in his pocket (metaphorically) and looked at both sitting next to each other, driven both, looked under the hood then decided to leave with the 35is. You need to get me right here, I’m not saying you didn’t do that, I’m saying we just won’t believe it, just like I won’t believe your kid is smarter than mine.. So save yourself that argument (I could have gotten an M3 but I didn’t)

It's because I knew I wasn't going to get my money's worth out of it. My office is a mile away from my house and I live in a busy part of the city that has 25-35 mph zones everywhere. yes, the M3 looks better and performs better, but it would have been excessive for my situation. That's all. Your judgment is a bit clouded by your smug attitude about owning the car you have.

Hey, be cool. I owned a 2010 335i and used to talk just like you. No M3 owner has ever argued that the M3 is an efficient, practical "value." HOWEVER, the day you ever own a E9X M3 is the day you will wonder how in the world could you have passed it up before. I would rather be parked in parking lot in my M3, than drive that 335i ever again.

i dont commute to work. the only place i drive to everyday is the gym, which is 5 miles from my house....10 miles, round trip, Mon-Fri...i still got the M to take me there....and boy, its worth every penny!

*on a side note, i suspect 335 buyers who can afford M cars choose the 335 simply over gas savings over long term...i mean, the V8 DOES suck that down like water...anyhow, what do i know? i bot the M. I cant really vouch for 335 drivers. ALL I KNOW, is that back in 2003, I bot a 330ci BECAUSE i really wanted the e46M3 but i couldnt afford it back then. So i settled for within my means. Today, i can afford both, so i took the M this time. didnt want to settle for second best this time around.

When i was out shopping for a Hybrid last week, the salesman saw my M parked in front, came over to check it out, and he said, "Nice car! I just bot a bimmer myself.."

i was like, "oh wow, nice, what'd u get?" He stated to me "I got a 328i, its NOT the payments on the M3 that i couldn't afford, it was my insurance."

I was like oohh, ok...whatever makes u sleep at night, brotha... (my insurance on my M3 is cheaper than my insurance for my Toyota Scion Lunchbox)

Just one more piece of data alluded to earlier. The M3 (and probably the 35 as well) have a significantly different and louder idle sound before warmed up. This is from emissions activity to clean up the dirtier exhaust before the cats warm up. I love the pre warm up idle sound in the M3. In warm climates it seems to only last for about 30 seconds.
