PS4S or Extreme Contact Sport
Ive been looking into tires for a while now and have all but been set on the new PS4S's but I have been reading really good reviews on the ECS's as well. The problem is, the reviews I am seeing for the ECS's are all on...lesser cars lets say. I am coming off of PSS and love them (- the excessive road noise). I am running stock suspension, wheels, and no spacers, looking to buy 255/35/19 F 275/35/19 R.
Does anyone have any insight on either of these? TIA |

I've had the Pilot Super Sports on my old STI and for 27k miles on my F80 as the OEM tire. I now have over 3k miles on the ECS on my M3. The ECS is a much better tire than the outgoing MPSS, especially in the wet. It's a night & day difference. Ride quality is better, grip is better, especially in wet conditions. As for the 4S I can't compare personally as I haven't driven it but after nearly a year after SYT_Shadow's speculative prediction it seems the reviews say the ECS isn't that far off the new 4S performance-wise, and the ECS is cheaper and available in a wider range of fitments. Hopefully this information is useful to someone.

There was a magazine test of the ECS vs PSS and the PSS was slightly ahead. I have run both on my E90M3. The P4SS is more than slightly ahead of the ECS in performance. The ECS is still a very good tire, and it is affordable and it is about the same weight as the PSS. A competitor like the SO4 is much heavier. I might try P4SS next

Any word on whether the shoulders of the ECS can take abuse on track? My PSS die, so I've switched up to RE71R. Would have bought RS4 if they were in stock, but they weren't.

The NT01, R888R make SO much noise on the street it is unbearable. I haven't tried the RS4, but the RS3 overheated and did not grip like the RE71 at all. |

If you filter the reviews on Tire Rack, it seems like the answer is "no". I was also looking on the Corvette Forums since it's the only non-Michelin tire available in my weird sizes, and those guys also said it falls apart on the track. Probably worth noting that it tends to run narrow for its size. The tread width (contact patch) is definitely smaller than the same size Michelin PSS or PS4S. For a DD, it's a decent tire, especially if you encounter frequent rain and don't want to pay the Michelin price premium.

I run 255/35 and 285/30 19" ECS on mine and think they're great for the road. I think they're a little stiff over bumps, but great value to performance ratio. Only tire I've owned that I would consider repurchasing.
With that said, it's hard to not try something new and give the PS4S's a shot when the time comes. Just wondering if they're really 20% more tire at the price. If you're using them for road duty, consider that the ECS has a better treadwear rating as well. |

Per the Tire Rack tests, the ECS is not 20% worse than a PS4S. It's just a matter of diminishing returns, like many other things automotive.

ECS is a much better street tire than PSS having run both on my car. And also much better than the Conti DW it replaced. Quieter at the limit and more forgiving particularly in the cold, wearing just as well and much quieter when worn, better in the wet and just as good or better in terms of dry handling than PSS and miles ahead of the DW
But It’s not in the same performance league as the PS4S except in bucketing rain. It also holds up slightly better on track, less likely to chunk if abused, supposedly ps4s needs a pretty fine edge on setup to avoid murdering the shoulders Last edited by Richbot; 04-24-2018 at 10:26 PM.. |

The PSS isn't a hardcore track tire but I never had an outing with it on the M3 (or my Corvette) that left me saying, "this is a shit tire for the track, I'll never use these again."

I've been a Michelin loyalist for over a decade, but for the first time ever I would actually opt for something other than their Pilot Sport line. For the $ difference, ECS wins hands down especially for street use. If you're driving hard enough to need better tires (on the street or track), then you probably wouldn't be looking at either of these to begin with.

Are the ECS that much better than their predecessor DW? I HATED the conti DW, they were stiff, noisy, and had no audible warning before breaking traction. to top it off they had terrible tread wear for a tire that rode that stiff. I am in the market for a new set of tires on the e90m, seems like the PSS is no longer made in alot of 19" sizes, so PS4 or ECS seem to be the only good options...

I remember getting the Hankook V12 when it got good reviews and that was one of the biggest pieces of shit I've ever used. For sure I'll get the PS4s if possible. On the X5 they don't have that tire size so I opted for the ECS. Happy so far but it's only been a couple thousand miles. |

I just ordered a wheel/tire package and compared ECS to PS4S. I'm sure I'd be satisfied with the ECS tires for my DD purposes, but it was a difference of only $188 to jump to the best street tire on the market. Seemed like a no-brainer to me.

I have no experience with ECS but judging PSS to PS4S there is a large improvement in comfort and performance with the PS4S. I always felt the PSS was a little skittish when <60F and as a street tire it took quite warm temps to perform best. My PS4S perform fairly well down to 45F and they are quieter and slightly softer over sharp edges while maintaining agile handling. I feel they are well worth the price if you like to drive aggressively and want best street traction. They are my favorite street tire to date but I would not take them to the track.

The ECS feel identical to PSS, at least in the dry. And according to testers the ECS is better in the wet. The PSS is my ultimate benchmark for a aggressive street driven tire and these are definitely on par if not above (better wet traction, better treadwear, cheaper).+1. The issues with the soft sidewalls from the DW have been completely rectified with the ECS.

Ha! I think I got suckered by the same review (about 7 or 8 years ago?). Your assessment of the H-V12 is too kind. I had better grip on my childhood BigWheel.
