Baked on break dust
Anyone have any ideas on how to get this baked break dust off of my rims? i used Sonax wheel cleaner full effect. It removed everything off except for the baked on crap.. I read that clay bar would work? let me know what you guys think my best option is. i have the zcp wheels FYI. Thanks in advance

did you agitate it with a brush or sponge or just hit it with the sonax and rinse? you kinda have to work at it, but don't be overly aggressive.

i tried clay barring it and it budged slightly. I did not try using a brush. Its on there pretty good, i do not know what to use without hurting the rims.

i'm sure by now you saw my thread on how i clean the m359 wheels... spray the sonax on dry. let it sit for about one minute. agitate it with a brush or a "bug sponge" type of thing.

Sage advice. Those bug sponges work wonders on the wheels after a track day. At a certain point though, the brake dust may have actually damaged the finish on the wheels and you'll need to get them refinished. Sintered pad material can do this as it is actually caustic to the paint.

http://www.prosoco.com/products/sure-klean-600 It's very very acidic, but it won't impact paint. I think I thinned it 50% with water and used a spray bottle to apply it. After about ten minutes it loosed up the baked on break dust so that all I needed was to use a tooth brush and water to remove it. |

I just ordered a 1/2 gallon of this. I'll report back after I use it.

Looks similar to Iron-X which I have had success with on my paint. I didn't really see any changes when I used it on my wheels.

this doesn't make any sense. are you trying to clean the barrel of the wheel? its much easier to take the wheels off to achieve this. literally quicker and easier than keeping the wheel on.

Buy one of the longer brushes, like this: http://www.chemicalguys.com/Ferret_W..._p/acc_s31.htm This even works on huge rear wheels and fits nicely between the spokes.

I wouldn't even use 0000, still way too abrasive.

Maybe I'm spoiled with black wheels, but I find it very effective at removing tire clag on the barrels. I agree that if you are looking for new-car/show-car cleanliness on the barrels, you need to remove them from the car.
