I know, that is only what the BMW engineer told Autospies. However that went down...

From the other thread;
8:05 --- 152.907 km/h -- Porsche 997 Carrera S, 355PS/1461kg (sport auto 05/05), Not sure if this is still the accurate time.

So what is the lap time?
Someone with a fancy graphics package will be able to work out the area under the curve on p43, so the challenge now is WHAT IS THE AVERAGE SPEED?!

This is still not solid, but if it is true, it's great, but at the same time, it makes me feel uneasy about pricing. I've made the same comment on the other thread that had the salesforce brochure, where BMW seemed to be directly going after the 911. If it actually beats the 911S by a significant margin, I think we might be toast, and might have to shell out more than we initially thought...

Do you think it will beat the old C5 Z06's time of 7:56? ( :rocks: )
Sorry, as a former owner I just have to bring that up all the time... |

The initial sales brochure for the E46 M3 also compared it with the 911. Don't worry just yet!

Tentatively - I'd say
I don't doubt that the new M3 can beat the S around the ring. It has a superior power to weight ratio and revs higher. I do not think this story though yet gives us real confidence that the M3 time is less than the S. Autospies is pretty bad on the outrageous headlines. We'll have to see but sounds reasonable/likely to me.

That being said the 444bhp V8 M3GTR ate up the Porsches back in the 2001 IMSA so who's to say it won't happen again........for a price..... |

I hope that it does close the gap on the 997S, however, I really doubt that it will beat it. About the same time that the M's official times are announced is likely to be about the same time that Porsche will announce how much addtitional HP the 911 is getting. IMO, it will likely get, at least, an additional 15 HP-producing 370; possibly even 375. The torque will likey be boosted to over 300 lb/ft. This is very probable since the X51 option currently yields 381 and 311, respectively; evidence that these numbers are easily attainable together. If Porsche does do what they should and exceed the x51 results with the base S model, then the M won't have a prayer.
