It was definitely a challenging track in the rain. From what I understand it is considered by a lot of people to be the most difficult track to drive in the rain in the entire country, that's what someone told me over the weekend anyways. My instructor lives in Ohio, so he's local. He was familiar with the wet line and we managed to be okay. Surprisingly, there was not a single incident all weekend. Good drivers all respecting their skill level and each other, I guess.

Lol, this reminded me of something my instructor said at the track. He's going to be racing at Mid Ohio in a couple weeks and he was hoping to God that it was not raining at the race. He said there would be a lot of carnage... I could only imagine how sketchy it would be at higher speeds. We were all going pretty slow over the weekend, and I was forced to seriously work on my steering and throttle/braking inputs. Perfect smoothness was 1000% necessary.

No, I wouldn't say scary. Stressful at times, yes. But, I'm working towards getting my race license next year. At some damn point I needed to drive on track in the rain, and I drove 8.5 hours to get there, so... that was my time. I have a great instructor who I trust very much, otherwise I would not have been as comfortable as I was.

i used to be leery of wet track days. out in california, we don't get much rain, so the probability of it raining on a track day is even less. now, my focus has evolved from wanting to go as fast as possible in perfect conditions to embrace a wet track day if one should come along... for the learning opportunity.

speaking of wet track days, ross bentley's driving in the rain webinar is tomorrow night. i think registration has closed, but he's pretty good about letting people in last minute.

It is, they laid down driveway sealer everywhere on the line, so you have to cross it straight. It has about 10% the grip that the rest of the track does. I spun a 330i on the warm up lap showing my friend the wet line

I have been worried about driving in the rain since I started this sport. I knew it was going to happen at some point, but I was not really okay with it until this weekend lol. I'm actually glad that it happened now, I needed it. I know you guys don't get much rain out in CA, but eventually the opportunity should present itself

That is so cool Ross Bentley is doing that webinar. I will not be available tomorrow at 8:30, but I am going to download the recorded version for sure. Thanks for the heads up on that!

he doesn't always get them up on the website (afterwards) right away. i paid for the "tuning your cars handling" webinar a while back. i wasn't able to participate live, but it was well worth it for the content after the fact.

So that's what they put on there. I was told that something was put on the paved surfaces where the normal "dry" line is, and you could tell by looking at it how slick it was. You're right, anytime you cross over it you have to be perfectly straight, or you're going to slide. I saw a Porsche spin right in front of me during the parade laps at the beginning of the weekend...

Cool, good to know. I'm going to look and see what other webinars are on the website that I am interested in. Such a great resource.

i really enjoyed the "tune your car's handling" webinar. its not up yet, but maybe email him for it... it was supposed to be three hours, ended up being six. its him and a race engineer discussing various suspension components. pretty damn good and they do talk a little about aero and driving in the rain. that would be where i would start.

his podcasts are cool, but sometimes its just chatter.

Oh man, I would totally nerd out on something like that. I'll shoot him an email later and see what he says.

Whatsup Greg, Lol! Sorry we missed you on Sunday morning, you guys must have left before we got there. By then, there were only a handful of us still left who wanted to run in that weather, but they let us stay out until 2 or so. What a weekend, lol. I look forward to driving that track during NICE weather sometime in the future.

It was good to see you guys! I wish y'all could make it to VIR in Oct, there's always next time though

Nice. Lucky you getting back to Mid Ohio tomorrow. Forecast shows no rain and mid to low 70s. Way better than what we were dealing with over the weekend.

Rain is a challenge. The absolute hardest time to drive is when it starts raining. The track is changing so much each time around.

You have to keep pushing to win that trophy!

This is so true. Now that you mention it, you made me realize that every single lap really was different. Depending on how hard it had been raining or was currently raining, how much standing water there was on the track, the temperature, and the visibility, the conditions seemed to be changing all day long. Nothing was constant and/or predictable about the environment. I guess that's what made it even more important than usual to make my actions smooth and controlled. I can't wait for my next track event with good weather. I'm hitting up VIR twice in the next month and a half, fingers crossed for blue skies lol.

one of the things i got from ross bentley was to inflate the tires more than you need to. you won't overheat them because of the water and you'll have less of a contact patch, which would effectively "cut" through the water better. seems to be obvious, but i certainly hadn't considered it.

That is super interesting, I can definitely see the logic in that. I'll keep this in mind for the future.
