Why?....just why?? Why didn’t you call around to any number of shops that can do this? in your state, out of state, this forum would’ve told you. Why didn’t your spidy senses go off when he told you they don’t give estimates?? and why would they ever give you money back??? As soon as they started cutting it up it was a done deal.

I would've walked the moment he said that he doesn't give estimates for "custom jobs". It's kind of odd if you think about it. How can a shop not give an estimate for something like this?
The owner's email response says a lot about him and his shop. I think that he clearly doesn't care about retaining you as a future customer, otherwise he would've done something to resolve your issue. I respect your decision to not disclose the shop's name, but moving forward I would take my business elsewhere. |

unless you have the space, tools, experience and time to do this yourself, the people commenting on what it should cost are irrelevent. could you have got it done cheaper elsewhere? sure. did you even ask the price before they took the car to start? nope.. who is to blame? car owner and car owner only. should the shop knock anything off the price because owner felt it was high? nope. should car owner mention shops name specifically? yup.
this is how business is run. |

Instead they billed enough time for someone to receive a college education, build a house, raise a family and then bake muffins to celebrate before doing the actual mod itself.

they could have googled/youtubed it, but that is costing shop time+ tools and skills still to physically do it. OPs fault for not asking what it might cost

Literally could have bought a cheap welder, grinder, and learned how to splatter weld this together for less than $1,200.

When I had my OEM exhaust mod done, I brought it to a local muffler shop. They haven't had any experience with this mod before, but I printed out the DIY instructions AND had them watch the youtube video of the DIY.
They quoted me $200 to get it done. When I returned, they said they took a little longer but would honor the $200 price. That is how good business is done. Sorry OP, some of the responsibility falls onto you as well. You need to protect yourself instead of just handing them a blank check and letting them go wild. It's a tough situation but I hope you get the resolution you need. Good luck
