Smell won't bother you after you get used to it. In fact I don't even notice it anymore......Phil

Smell is going to be subjective but I personally couldn't handle it so I have HFC. Oil usage shouldn't change unless your driving habits do. Gas usage will decrease (+1-2 mpg) provided your driving habits don't change.
How old do you mean, the 08-09s? How do we get the newer software? is it a huge difference, very interested.

Looks like you are DCT so if you had it updated for the lag issue, the software may be fine (depends on when you updated). In my case (08 6MT), I got 20 HP just from updating the software. From what I have gathered, it seems like BMW may have modified the knock sensitivity portion of the software allowing the car to advance timing.

Here is the thread I started that explains my experience with this:
http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=676637

The car relies heavily on the plugs to advance the timing (it uses them as knock sensors) so old plugs can cause the car to pull timing and not make full power.

The dealership, EAS, Mike Benvo, ESS, and Evolve can all help you update the software a variety of different ways for different costs.
