Adding mine to the repository of examples.............
Have not taken possession yet. Based on discussions here, I totally buy into the (as one troll put it) bearing mania. Had Matt at ACM take care of the bearings, mounts and all fluids first thing before the car is delivered to me in KC - due here via Plycar next week. I'd say the pics indicate I made a good call on the repair spend. |

Autocouture takes such nice bearing photos. Always very artistically done.
It would be nice if there were a bunch of S65 bearing photos that looked good, but there are not. Good call on changing your bearings CaptainKrik2008. Cheers,

I'm an executive in my space and I've made a little bit of money but with kids going off to college, a wife that doesn't work who really likes to shop and spend, and with my spending habits, at 58 I'm going to keep chugging forward for the foreseeable future. Point being, I would really dig it if AUTOcouture was local because I would love being affiliated and working in their shop, even it if it was turning wrenches. My perspective of them from afar is they are as fanatical, or almost, as I am about tradecraft. Not trying to hijack my own thread, but your comment makes me daydream about doing something with my hands again, instead of just my mind. Started out as a machinist and welder studying for my engineering degree but I've made more money using just my mind, but I'd like the last career doing something I dig. So much for my daydreaming ramblings.........

I like the way Autocouture are using the same cheap Amazon transverse engine support bar I purchased to do mine. I thought I was being a cheapskate not springing the for the "deluxe" schwaben one, but after using the amazon one there really is no need for anything else. Plus I've a had a few bad experiences with schwaben tools and don't really wanna give them any more $.

Looks very much like the HF bar, which I used to support a couple of S65 while doing rod bearings. Spend money on a good torque wrench, not on a fancy engine support bar.

You saying my $39 autozone 1/2" torque wrench isn't accurate enough to torque down those rod bolts!?! I'm kidding.. I have a set of computorque high accuracy digital torque wrenches..

Here's a set from today coming from a 2008 E90 M3. One of the worst non-spun sets we've pulled in a while...
At 132k miles the owner wanted to proactively replace his bearings for the peace of mind. There were no symptoms- the engine ran fine with no abnormal tendencies or sounds when it arrived. Just goes to show you that you can't be sure about your bearings. You're fine one mile, the next mile you're not. These shells were so poorly worn and overheated that they were bowed enough to "clip" onto each journal. Very luck there was no journal damage. Scary, and in the nick of time. |

Don't mean to thread jack..... Kirk, Thanks for the kind words. I am so glad we were able to help you pick the right car and service it before she went back to you. We are always humbled to service peoples' cars without them stepping foot in our facility...makes us feel like we're doing something right haha. If you're ever in the NYC area, make sure you stop in and say hello! Quote:

Basically. It is when the bearing over heated to a point where its shape is changed and grabbing onto the crank. I saw it once (on a different car) when I was at the indy shop.
