Hood Struts
My hood struts don't want to hold the hood up anymore. Anyone replace theirs? If so, post where you got yours and if you are happy. I'm seeing anywhere from $20 - $70 a piece...

Bringing this post back from the dead.
I ordered the appropriate hood struts off FCP Euro. The problem is they are super hard to push down. I think my hood is literally bending out of shape because they are so strong. This one:https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...-sg402058#desc Anybody know if these are REALLY for our M3 with lighter hood or is it for the heavier E90 hoods? FCP lists it as fitting all 3 series including the M but i cant be right? Just doesnt seem right. Someone please confirm. |

Here is the deal, the root cause of this issue is that Stabilus has something messed up in their catalog and it is impacting all of the retailers.
The correct part is #51237900795 and is for our M3 hoods, with a pressure rating of 200N, appropriate for our aluminum hoods (which are lighter than the normal 3 series hoods, which required a greater pressure rating of 330N). The 330N part is #51237060550. Look at the struts you have and they will show the pressure rating on them. 100% sure yours will have the 330N rating if it is shooting your hood up really hard. ECS Tuning: I went threw a lengthy back and forth with them. They twice sent me part #51237060550, when I ordered part #51237900795. For some reason their system is set up to show that #51237060550 has superseded #51237900795 and is appropriate for our cars. If you order the Stabilus brand part #51237900795 from them, YOU WILL GET #51237060550, which is the 330N version and will turn your hood into a rocket ship. I haven't ordered the BMW OEM Stamped version from them, under part #51237900795, but have heard that will indeed get you the 200N version which is correct for our cars. OEM Bimmer Parts: They show Stabilus part #51237900795 in stock as well, but I confirmed with Max that their stock is also the 330N versions and he thinks the Stabilus catalog is messed up. They don't appear to have the BMW OEM Stamped versions at all. FCP Euro: They have both the Stabilus #51237900795 and BMW OEM Stamped #51237900795 in stock. Obviously the BMW version is 6x the cost of the Stabilus version. I have an email out to them to see what pressure rating I will get if I order the BMW OEM Stamped version for $67 each. I assume their Stabilus version is the same as ECS and OEM Bimmer Parts. Last edited by delirium330; 04-02-2019 at 05:46 PM.. |

I bought mine from BMW Parts Wholesale because they were the cheapest option at the time. That may have changed since then, but I got them at $48.85 each..
Part Number 51-23-7-900-795

^ Note those are the BMW OEM stamped versions. Only those will get you the correct 200N pressure rating.

Wally1552, you need either:
OEM part number: 51237900795 Stabilus part number: 9669ZC These are both the same mechanically but the OEM one has the bmw logo on it so u pay a lot extra for it. The link you attached shows the correct oem part number but incorrect manufacturer number. Possible they sent you the wrong one. I bought this one about a year ago, works perfect: https://www.amazon.com/Stabilus-OE-9.../dp/B00DZKKYJO I went through the search for correct struts here: https://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1425850 Last edited by M43S7RO; 04-02-2019 at 06:28 PM.. |

You are confusing the part numbers, the numbers I referenced are correct. Fcp has them wrong.
You ran into the same issue here: https://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1332086 |

Not sure what you are talking about, but the link to that Amazon item you shared shows a lift force of 330N. That is not correct for the M3.

Gotcha, yea that Amazon description does not fit with what I know that part number to be. Sorry I hadn't looked at the specs they list. Problem is the specs can't even be found on the Stabilus website anymore. I think the problem is many websites have these struts incorrectly identified.
From what I recall a year ago after researching, the numbers I reference are correct. The regular 3 series is oem 51237060550 which is Stabilus part SG402058. Websites having it incorrect makes it a mess. |

Yup, I made sure to get the correct pressure, especially after seeing the cheap prices for the generic stuff.. Gotta pay to play
